Social networks are all around us with Facebook becoming so poplar that is spawned the major motion picture The Social Network. However, while Facebook is the largest social network in the world, it does have its worthy competitors. One competitor that is arguably the most worthy is none other than Twitter with seemingly everyone hopping on board.

Since Twitter is such a popular online service, it should come as no surprise that a bunch of mobile developers have produced applications focusing solely on the network. One such application for Android is dubbed Twidroyd which we’ve told you about in the past. Well, if you’re a user of this application you may notice that it features some advertisements making for a slightly less pleasent experience.

Well, it looks like enough users have complained that the makers of Twidroyd have gone ahead and removed the advertisements in the latest build now available on the market. Have you checked out Twidroyd? If so, let us know what you think of it in the comments below.

Speeding is easy to do, and like it or not having someone else in the car nagging you about it actually can help. What to do if your mother is unavailable? Check out Slow Down in the App Store. It’s a product of the Belgian organization OVK, Parents of Children Killed in Road Accidents, and it has a very simple idea: if you drive too fast it slows down your music, as demonstrated below. Cross the limit and your thumping beats get run through molasses, but get back to a legal speed and Joanna Newsom’s lilting highs stop sounding like a zombie’s baleful lamentations. We’re not entirely sure whether the app works outside of its native land at this point, and given how unreliable the indicated speed limits in navigation software tend to be we’re not sure we want it to. But, if you have a bad habit you can’t kick, this free app might just help.

Man, Motorola’s not going to be pleased about this! The Droid X is justifiably one of Verizon’s marquee devices for this holiday season and takes pride of place on the carrier’s Cyber Monday offers page, but wait… why does its screen display the iPhone version of Google Maps? Oops!

[Thanks, Chris]

Talk about timely. We’ve been waiting for months (with bated breath, might we add) for Pleco 2.2 to finally hit Apple’s App Store, and after dealing with a few launch day bugs last week, we can finally say it’s out and ready to dominate any Chinese homework you’ve been hastily procrastinating on. The Pleco Chinese Dictionary is now available in the app store at version 2.2.1, supporting both fullscreen handwriting input and live camera-based character recognition. Have a peek at the video past the break if you’re still curious as to what this app can do for you, and feel free to toss your experiences with it down in comments below. Here’s hoping this is only the first of many languages Pleco decides to tackle — not that we’re much on tossing out subtle hints.
