Social networks are all around us with Facebook becoming so poplar that is spawned the major motion picture The Social Network. However, while Facebook is the largest social network in the world, it does have its worthy competitors. One competitor that is arguably the most worthy is none other than Twitter with seemingly everyone hopping on board.

Since Twitter is such a popular online service, it should come as no surprise that a bunch of mobile developers have produced applications focusing solely on the network. One such application for Android is dubbed Twidroyd which we’ve told you about in the past. Well, if you’re a user of this application you may notice that it features some advertisements making for a slightly less pleasent experience.

Well, it looks like enough users have complained that the makers of Twidroyd have gone ahead and removed the advertisements in the latest build now available on the market. Have you checked out Twidroyd? If so, let us know what you think of it in the comments below.

One of the biggest gripes consumers have with the Android platform is the fact that it’s so difficult to stay up to date. Of course, this isn’t the fault of the consumers but instead the actual hardware manufacturers who have continuously delayed the latest builds of Android. One infamous case of this is the Galaxy S which, here in the United States, has yet to receive the latest update, Android ‘Froyo’ 2.2.

This is quickly becoming a problem especially since Android ‘Gingerbread‘ 2.3 is already making its market. Luckily, those of you with a Galaxy S from either Virgin Mobile or SaskTel will be happy to hear that they are now pushing out the update. News comes to us from Samsung’s Canadian Twitter account that says both Virgin Mobile and SaskTel will join Bell as official providers of the Froyo update.

This is great news for our neighbors to the north but what about us here in the United States? It’s pretty ridiculous that a device as popular as the Galaxy S has yet to receive the update. What gives?

Android smartphones from just about every hardware manufacturer are on the market causing quite a bit of buzz. While popular handsets like the HTC EVO 4G and Motorola Droid X have been causing waves, LG’s Optimus smartphone series has been holding its own as well. Of course, negative publicity like the slip up regarding Android 2.3 not coming to the Optimus line up (which has been disproved) may not be the best thing for the devices but it doesn’t seem to be hurting them too much.

LG has come forth today to confirm the fact that their Optimus series of handsets have managed to sell over 2 million units. This is great news for the company as it comes only 25 days after their announcement that is had managed to sell 1 million. This just goes to show you that in this day and age high powered smartphones aren’t the only devices that do well as there is a niche for budget conscious phones like the Optimus S.

Have you picked up an LG Optimus smartphone? If so, which one?

Android updates are some of the most talked news items in the community with owners clamoring over the latest release. However, while it has taken quite some time for devices to get the Froyo update, Gingerbread is already on the streets meaning smartphone owners will once again be stuck waiting for an update. Luckily, if you’re a Motorola Droid X owner you’ll be happy to know that your device has recieved an update in the form of 2.2.1.

While it’s not the highly sought after 2.3 update, it does bring with it some hefty changes, which we told you about here (including the Madden 11 demo). You may remember that we told you the update was getting a widespread roll-out but if you haven’t yet received the update, it should now be avaialble as an over the air download.

Have you received the Android 2.2.1 update? If not, let us know.

If you’ve been paying attention you’ll probably know that Motorola has been working to split up their entities and form independent companies. This may lead you to wonder what exactly will change to give Motorola the edge inthe consumer electronics world. Well, if you were wondering this you may be disappointed to find that the only thing we’ve uncovered is that they will be switching up their branding.

In fact, according to Engadget, the only thing that has changed is that Motorola will be heavily marketing their name in red starting in the new year. What else has changed, you ask? Well, we’re going to have to wait and see as Motorola has kept quiet about it thus far.

Let’s just hope we see some hot new smartphone (and tablet) releases as Motorola is on a roll with devices like the Droid 2 and Droid X.
