TimeCommand dock turns your iPad into a very pricey dimmer switch

stu2402 — Sat, 11 Dec 2010 10:24:38 +0000

XtremeMac has been crankin’ out iPod docks for years, and now former CEO Gary Bart has launched Stem Innovation, a company dedicated exclusively to iOS accessories. For its first trick, Bart and company have introduced TimeCommand which (as its name implies) goes beyond the whole dock thing and comes across as a control station for the bedroom. Among its many charms are iPhone / iPod / iPad compatibility, the ability to control your mood lighting (including a dimmer and a “wake by light” feature), battery backup (don’t miss work, even if the power goes out), an app with Internet Radio playback, and something called Stem:Sonic iQ digital signal processing. Available now at the Apple store for $100.

Cobra brings radar detection to the iPhone and reckless endangerment to the app store

gunturbabu — Fri, 10 Dec 2010 20:17:53 +0000

It was bound to happen sooner or later: an unholy marriage between an iPhone (or second gen or later iPod touch) and a radar detector. As seems most fitting, the peeps at Cobra are behind this one, and we must say that if this is your thing, the premise is pretty interesting: the handset, running a free app from the company, connects to the iCobra fuzz buster via Bluetooth and alerts the driver to things like cameras, commonly identified speed traps, rough intersections, and more. Suggested retail is $170, but we’ve seen it making the rounds for the $100 mark. Race your way to your favorite e-tailer to see for yourself.

Google eBooks is live: just in case Amazon, B&N, and Apple aren’t enough

rlo429 — Mon, 06 Dec 2010 22:45:28 +0000

You hear about this whole e-books thing? We hear it’s gonna be a pretty big deal. Google, always with its finger on the pulse of our ever-evolving digital lifestyles, has decided to take a wild stab at this nascent market, and is launching Google eBooks today. Formerly known as Google Editions, the Google eBooks ecosystem is actually a pretty grand gesture, and seems to combine most of the positives of the primary e-book contenders (Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Apple, naturally), while skimping on the UI flourishes, in traditional Google fashion. Books you buy are stored in the cloud, with your progress synced Whispersync-style, and can be read on your choice of native Android, iPhone, or iPad apps; from your browser; or on any device that supports the Adobe Digital Editions DRM for PDF and ePub files, which includes the B&N Nook and the Sony Reader (and plenty of other devices). Google is also trading on its vast repository of public domain books, with 3 million free eBooks on offer at its Google eBookstore, in addition to traditional paid fare. It’s certainly a crowded market, full of sharp elbows, but it seems Google is having no trouble adjusting.

Slow Down app slows down your tunes until you slow down your car (video)

stu2402 — Mon, 06 Dec 2010 14:28:14 +0000

Speeding is easy to do, and like it or not having someone else in the car nagging you about it actually can help. What to do if your mother is unavailable? Check out Slow Down in the App Store. It’s a product of the Belgian organization OVK, Parents of Children Killed in Road Accidents, and it has a very simple idea: if you drive too fast it slows down your music, as demonstrated below. Cross the limit and your thumping beats get run through molasses, but get back to a legal speed and Joanna Newsom’s lilting highs stop sounding like a zombie’s baleful lamentations. We’re not entirely sure whether the app works outside of its native land at this point, and given how unreliable the indicated speed limits in navigation software tend to be we’re not sure we want it to. But, if you have a bad habit you can’t kick, this free app might just help.

Computer Engineer Barbie now available, and her phone has been upgraded since we last saw her

tmunzke — Thu, 02 Dec 2010 00:07:36 +0000

We were fairly impressed with Computer Engineer Barbie‘s Linux laptop and cellphone when we last saw her at the Toy Fair in New York City. Well, the doll is available now, and her gear has gotten an upgrade for the retail version. The pink laptop now boasts some kind of custom Barbie operating system, and yes, she seems to be sporting an iPhone these days. We assume this is a tie in with Mattel’s Barbie ‘I Can Be’ iPhone app, but we also remember from our childhood that Barbie is an intense tech geek who always has to have the latest gear, so we can’t say that we’re surprised. Computer Engineer Barbie is available now for $12.99. A shot of the first Computer Engineer Barbie we met is after the break.
