While not a burden for some, there are many iPhone users out there that are stuck using the minimum 200MB data plan. Keeping track of your data usage is a bit of a hassle, but like everything else in life, there’s an app for that.

DataMan uses the built in data usage meter to easily tell you how much data you are using, whether it be with 3G or WiFi. Because it runs in the background, it can also inform you of when you get to certain data use thresholds (i.e. 50% data used, etc.). All you have to do to get the app working is to set up what day of the month your data usage starts and let it run.

The last feature, which is probably the neatest feature of all, is also the one that will irk many users. As you are using data, the app geotags your location so that you can see the places that you are online the most. Seeing your data use on a map is quite neat (although not all that useful), but it requires your location services to always be on. If you don’t like the feature, you’re out of luck because the geotagging isn’t an option that you can just turn off. Talk about a serious battery drain. On a device that already isn’t known for wonderful battery life, having something like a data tracker killing X% just by existing is a major bummer.

For a user who is perilously close to running out of data every month, an app like DataMan is an invaluable resource. With the inability to turn off location services though, you’ll have to be willing to sacrifice a bunch of battery life for the service to work.

Facebook was late to the geo-location social networking space, but they plan to grow and reign supreme in the race. This past week Facebook was given a patent for “Systems and methods for automatically locating web-based social network members.” Facebook can determine the location using a GPS identifier. It will also combine a status update with the member’s current location. Below is the abstract of the patent:

Systems and methods for automatically locating web-based social network members are provided. According to one embodiment, contact content including an associated GPS identifier and status for web-based social network members located at or near the same location automatically appears on a GPS-enabled device. A further exemplary system includes a GPS-enabled device configured to receive a GPS identifier and a status representing a location and a current state for a web-based social network member, a processing module that associates the received GPS-identifier and the received status, and a communications module that sends the associated GPS-identifier and status to a server comprising a web-based social network database. Contact content in a web-based social network database record in the web-based social network database is updated to include the associated GPS identifier and status for the web-based social network member.

While I was at an after-party for Day 2 of CTIA Fall 2010, I met with a very outgoing guy who represented Fast Society.

Fast Society is made for those who want to get together with a group of people, and need a fast way of communicating with them. The App allows for Team Texting. All the user needs to do is set up their friends for that night, and one text message tells them all where you want to meet.

Other bonuses include Team Instant Conference Calls as well as Team Location Sharing. This social networking app is available for free on the iTunes store.

Okay people, I need your help on this one. Somebody please tell me how Powwownow makes money? The popular conferencing service is now available through this free app. Hurry up and download it before they realize they can’t make it up in volume sales!

In all seriousness, what you get when you download the Powwownow app is conference calling on your iPhone done right. As expected, you can get together with other callers smoothly and without glitches. But Powwownow gets the fine points right as well: it integrates with your e-mail/phone list, it figures out where you are via GPS and uses your location to pick the best call-in number, it automatically dials it for you, and it generates a pin for you and even remembers it.

You can join conferences or create your own, complete with its own title and description line. You can use your contacts to generate an invite list. You can even see what time of day your conference will be for all attendees. If those 9 a.m. eastern time meetings aren’t appreciated in Boston, trust me, your web guy in Long Beach will hate them. Powwownow knows this, and lets you know you’re doing it at the conference set-up phase. (…)
