It’s purpose is not to deplete IQ points, but to create magic with the iPhone better than the Magic Mover. It has a “guess the card” trick put in technology by dialing out on an iPhone. The iPhone will then tell you what card [...]

photo 16 225x300 X Card Trick HD for iPad ReviewI have mixed emotions when it comes to magic tricks. One the one hand, I am almost always amazed and wowed by an illusion and its effect, and when given the opportunity to learn how to do it I’m chomping at the bit. On the other hand, once I learn the secret behind the trick, it always seems a bit petty and cheap, regardless of how impressive it appears to others. I suppose deep down I really want there to be more mysticism, or at least a more complicated mechanic, behind the trick, but there rarely is. This holds true for X-Card, the latest card trick app for the iPad. With it, you can perform one signature illusion fairly easily. Whether it impresses anyone is another matter.

With X-Card, you can have a random person pick a card from an ordinary deck of cards, reveal that card to everyone (including you) and then (after considerable concentration on your part) have it magically appear on your iPad screen. That’s the trick, and it’s all this app does. Generally, though, it delivers this effect quite well. My only gripe is that it was difficult at first to know where the tutorials were while in the app. I actually had to do a bit of digging, including going into the main settings menu on the iPad. Somehow, I just don’t think something this simple needs to require so many steps. The first thing you’re going to want to do is learn the secret to the trick, so hiding it from the person who is going to be performing it seems counterproductive.

I’m not going to reveal any of X-Card’s secrets here in this review. If the trick sounds interesting to you, pick up the app. It’s inexpensive and relatively easy to learn and perform – just don’t have any of your friends touch the screen while you’re performing the trick if you want it to work; believe me. X-Card probably isn’t going to blow anyone’s mind, but it might be a fun diversion among friends – as long as you can handle learning the ugly truth of how the trick actually works.

tablet Study shows that tablet computers are most wanted, for nowI’m always interested when I heard information like this: a new study has shown that tablet computers really are the big thing.

The study was taken of 4,000 consumers, and 14 percent of them plan to buy a tablet computer. This is versus the 13 percent that want to buy laptops, 11 that want an e-reader, and 8 percent netbooks or desktops.

I don’t know about you, but I did the math, and find it comes to only 46 percent. So what is the other half doing? Buying no computers?

Well, we said that iPad sales could eclipse game devices and e-readers. Is it coming to pass? Of course, the research points to a potential 43 million in tablet PC sales.

Glu has started down the freemium path. They’ve seen good returns from their current games released as ad-based and with in-app purchase upgrades. So we can expect to see more from them in this area. So far they have announced two of the five freemium games they plan on releasing this year, Magic Life and Gun Bros. The next three games will be announced in early October as Gun Bros. kicks off.

Magic Life is a game similar to many of the other free to play games we’ve seen released — well, the more popular ones anyway. They require lots of time in the game doing simple tasks and quests to level up your player. They also include lots of social interaction with other virtual players.

In Magic Life you play a new wizard learning the ropes in a magical world. You do this by gathering items (fruits, rocks, etc.) that then go into magic spells (that you have to mix yourself in the game’s cauldrons), which then allow you to complete quests. It’s that mix of multi-part complex, yet very simple and easy to complete tasks that typifies a freemium game like this. And Magic Life hits all the right points for that.

Will Magic Life become the popular hit social game for Glu? Time will tell. Personally, I don’t really like freemium games that depend on marginal game play elements and are mainly task focused. We Rule, Farmville, etc., are all similar in that aspect. But there are lots of players that really love them and spend lots of time playing them. And that’s why they make money. Expect to see Magic Life at the beginning of October.

When it comes to being ushered along to your destination at a high rate of speed within a cocoon of luxury, it’s hard to go wrong with the Mercedes S Class. However, if this $90,000 (and way, way up) sedan isn’t special enough for you, teutonic tuner Brabus is happy to make some… improvements. The company bumps the power up to 750hp, good for a top speed of 211mph whilst also providing a wealth of iDevices to those being coddled inside. There’s an iPad (with keyboard) at each of the rear seats, an entertainment system built into the back of both headrests powered by a 64GB iPod Touch, and a 15.2-inch display that swivels down from the ceiling to expose the output from a tunk-mounted Mac Mini. Even for the most ardent of Mac lovers it’s a bit too much, but if it weren’t it wouldn’t be a Brabus. The cost? Nobody’s saying, but don’t expect this very special kind of excess to come cheap.
