If you remember Frogger, or any of the many copy cats that followed you will be in familiar territory here. The basic idea is to get your baby ducks safely across a busy street of traffic without losing too many in the process. These ducks are pretty dumb though, and they will run right into traffic so you are their only hope. You can control the speed of the little guys by tilting your Iphone to the left and right, but they dart out on their own. The only way of bringing them to a complete stop and saving their damn lives in the process is by tapping on Momma duck to give a howl. Unfortunately this will only momentarily stun them into submission, a second or so later and they’re back to the mad dash. There is also a runty little brown duckling in the mix who can’t make it across as fast as its siblings. Take extra care with him because he’ll happily trot along straight into incoming traffic.

The graphics and animation are really nice, and presented in a pseudo 3d style. Seeing the little guys get smacked is hilarious but a bit morbid. You seem to actually feel the thud of the hit as they fling into the air in 3d out into your screen. Honestly, they are more like lemmings than ducklings with their suicidal tendencies. I happen to live in a neighborhood with a few ponds nearby, so I actually live Urban Ducklings on most days, although my neighbors and I tend be a bit more polite and caring about the little quackers than the maniacal drivers here.

Urban Ducklings succeeds as a casual game. The controls are really responsive and most importantly the game is easy to pick up and play. Tilting the Iphone back and forth to control the ducks safe voyage works well and feels natural. This type of game has been done before so it’s nice to see that developers are using the device’s strengths to add new life to an old idea.

However, all is not sunny in duckling land. The music is pretty simple and can get a bit tedious. Although for some reason one of the games sound effects is a sample of the theme from “Dragnet”, which doesn’t make any sense, but it is funny. Also, I don’t know if it’s just me but Urban Ducklings took way too much time to load, almost 45 seconds. If this was a big name game or an EA title I would understand, but this supposed to be a quick pick up and play kind of app. On a couple of occasions my impatience got the better of me and I gave up before I even started.
 Urban Ducklings

Sadly, I don’t think there is enough in Urban Ducklings to keep me glued to the screen for too long, but I can see playing it every now and again. It is a bit of a one trick pony, but you do know what you’re getting into. If you like this genre of games, Urban Ducklings is one of the better ones. Plus, it’s only 99 cents and that’s cheaper than a pack of gum. I can guarantee you’ll have more fun here than with a pack of Hubba Bubba.

Favre Stamped

Madden launch day was a sad day for the iPhone world. Although we could all go out and drop $70 for a shiny new console game (which I’m sure ten billion people did), our beloved iPhones were sadly neglected. EA kept saying that the iPhone would get Madden, but the skeptics thought that maybe this wouldn’t be the year.

Well, I, along with the other skeptics, were wrong. Madden is coming… and I have some fantastic looking screenshots! The game will include real NFL rosters (including Brett Favre on the Vikings) and will be available for opening day weekend. As soon as I hear more, I’ll let you guys know.

Check out a couple more screenshots after the break. Enjoy!

bs6 IBombSquad

It’s an all too cliché scene: Our hero is in front of an explosive device furiously ticking down in that soulless “beep, beep, beep.” It’s almost been disarmed, averting total disaster, but as the timer gets closer and closer to zero, only one choice remains: Cut the red wire or the blue wire? Whoa, calm down. This isn’t some 90’s action film, it’s iBombSquad, a new gaming app that allows players to do their best Keanu Reeves impression (The first one that came to mind because I watched “Speed” last weekend) as they remove wires without setting off the ticking time bomb on their screen.

iBombSquad is from Banzali Games and, according to the developer, is a memory game that pushes your concentration to the limit. It begins with a time bomb consisting of two wires. To remove a wire, simply swipe the black casing away from the bomb within the given time (normally four to five seconds). As you progress through the levels an additional colored wire will be added. You must start with the newest wire and work your way backwards from newest to oldest to disarm the bomb. Fail to do so and you’ll know immediately (BOOM = loss)

This game is fun…for about thirty seconds. If you were smart enough to buy an iPhone, know your colors and have any short term memory left after being a teenager you will master this game very quickly, thus losing interest. There is simply no progression in difficulty. Sure, you advance in levels and the “bonus bombs” are actually pretty fun, but the game play itself is very repetitive. I saw no difference from level one to level six.

Now at this point it would be easy to use the phrases you all are expecting such as “this game isn’t da bomb” or “this game lacks explosive features such as blah blah.” Instead, I will take the high road and simply say this about iBombSquad: Good premise, but is lacking in the challenge department. If you’re going to pay for an app, even for $0.99, it should be one you expect to use more than once. In my opinion, this one’s a dud (okay I couldn’t resist).

Remove the wires within the given time
Fail to do so and...BOOM
Bonus bombs are a nice addition

swine time iphone app 200x300 Swine Time Is An Entertaining Flight In Under 30 SecondsThere seems to be a correlation for me lately… The shorter a game is, the longer I play it. And this is certainly the case with Swine Time, the newest release from Vito Technology.

If you’re lucky, a game of Swine Time will take 30-60 seconds to play. Most of the time a round lasts under 20 seconds. Still, I could waste an afternoon eagerly tapping the “new game” button in an attempt to beat my own high score.

The rules are simple. You are a flying pig and your goal is to stay aloft as long as possible. Unfortunately, your immediate airspace is contaminated with Swine flu viruses. One touch from any of the floating viruses and you’re dead. (…)
