Mozilla recently announced that Firefox users have downloaded over two billion browser add-ons.  As part of the milestone announcement, Mozilla created a list of the top 25 add-ons.  Mozilla has about 60,000 add-ons contributed by third-party developers.  There are about 150 million active users of these two billion downloads.  “When we reached 1 billion Firefox Add-on downloads in November 2008, we thought it would take us less than 3 years to get to the next billion, and with your help, we’ve gotten to 2 billion in half that time,” stated the Mozilla’s add-on team in a blog post. “With more than 150 million add-ons in use every day, we know that the next billion add-on downloads will be here before we know it.”

Below is the list:

Traveling can be a hassle. That’s why, after years of fumbling with tickets, hotel confirmation numbers, and miserable trips across the globe, I am a loyal TripIt user. The site is a home for your travel documents on the web – it’s as simple as forwarding any email confirmation you get to [email protected]. TripIt parses the email and gives you an understandable itinerary accessible from anywhere. TripDeck, by Mobiata, adds a beautiful front-end to TripIt in the form of an iPhone application. It takes TripIt’s basic functionality, adds in some features of TripIt Pro at a lower cost, and brings it all to a beautifully designed mobile package.

Sync It Up

Unlike many other travel apps, TripDeck doesn’t make you enter any of your travel information on your own. Instead, simply allow TripIt to interface with the application and it will pull down all of your travel arrangements. The workflow is quite simple: 1) book travel plans, 2) forward them to [email protected], 3) view them in TripDeck. You’ll wonder how you lived without that kind of simplicity after using the application.

Sightseeing

TripDeck wouldn’t be much if all it did was mirror TripIt’s mobile interface. Instead, TripDeck adds a terrific UI innovation with the concept of “trip cards.” Each phase of your trip is given its own dedicated card, with a confirmation number (if applicable) and all relevant information. For my recent trip abroad, it was helpful to look at all of my different travel and accommodation arrangements at a glance. TripDeck even provides quick shortcuts to call any of the travel providers you’re booked with. I booked my trip with AirBnB and found that TripIt properly extracted all of my data and TripDeck displayed it in a rather useful manner.

Trip Cards

No Such Thing as Free

As with many free apps, there’s a catch to TripDeck. The application does not include many of the features of paid travel apps, relying instead on TripIt sync and its user interface for downloads. Those are, it would seem, enough for a basic user. For those who want more, TripDeck offers three different in-app purchase packs. The first delivers push real-time alerts with flight status. Also available are zoomable flight maps and live flight statistics (ex: your gate information). Mobiata charges users $2.99 per extra feature, adding up to a costly $8.97 for the app “nicely equipped.” Astute readers will recognize that most of these features are included in another Mobiata application, FlightTrack Pro. I used FlightTrack Pro in conjunction with TripDeck on my trip to test both and found that the features in FlightTrack Pro (and, therefore, in TripDeck’s add-ons) are definitely good for the constant commuter but mostly unnecessary for the casual traveler.

TripDeck's Premium Push Alerts

The Frugal Traveler

TripDeck is an integral tool for any traveler – especially one on a budget. The free app is essential for keeping track of information on a trip, whether it’s accommodation information, plane gates, or train times. While much of this is due to TripIt, the Mobiata team deserves kudos for such slick integration and a well polished UI. Business and frequent travelers should beware that the add-ons for TripDeck are expensive. There are other options out there that provide similar features (like TripTracker Pro), but few are as visually attractive as TripDeck.

Want to turn your iPhone into a fan? There’s an app accessory for that! Actually, German company HMB Tech has enough original accessories to make Inspector Gadget jealous.

For 20 Euros, my favorite is the iPocketFan for iPhone (see video bellow).

But HMB Tech as something for everyone:

Like Gizmodo says, “there’s enough add-ons and apps here to open a doctor’s surgery”.

It’s incredible what you can do with an iPhone. I think this is just the beginning. We’re probably going to see more and more of these accessories in the future.

If you could create your own iPhone accessory, what would it be?

made for ipad apps

Developers have been busy for months retooling their iPhone apps to make a second debut on the iPad. Some apps are little more than HD versions of the same game, crisper graphics that must be re-purchased for twice the price. Other made-for-iPad apps have been upgraded with features, controls or exclusive add-ons that take advantage of iPad-only technology like the larger screen, reengineered multi-touch or faster processor. And lastly, there are the iPad apps that been designed only for this device, created from scratch to work exclusively with Apple’s new tablet.

For a peek at the kinds of apps that won’t fit on your iPhone, read on! This is our first list of must-have apps for the iPad.

Because of its tablet size, the iPad has been described as “the Kindle killer.” We’ll start our list of 10 new iPad-only apps with the kindle-killing app, Apple’s own iBooks.

ibooks ipad app Must Have! 10 New IPad Only AppsiBooks, Apple Computer. Free. Rating: 9/10. If you gave an Amazon Kindle to a loved one last Christmas, you have just gone from angel to idiot. Apple puts its usual attention to design into this app, making e-book reading feel like reading a real book, while adding functionality. Kindle-killing trump card: the iPad’s backlit screen. Apple saved its reader for a screen that can give you an ultra-intuitive “book” experience, but better.

sketchbook-pro ipad appSketchbook Pro, Autodesk. $7.99. Rating: 10/10. Go to the iTunes store. Read the app reviews. They’re right. Pressure sensitivity, multi-touch exploitation, 10 levels of undo-redo, multi-layer exports in Photoshop format… if you have an artistic bone in your body, you cannot have more fun for $7.99, legally or otherwise.
