twitter logo Twitter Building A Custom Data Center In Salt Lake City
As Twitter is growing in popularity, the struggle to keep the website online is increasing. This was especially a challenge during the World Cup. About 300,000 new accounts are being created per day. In order to scale their website demand, Twitter plans to open a custom built server warehouse in Salt Lake City, Utah.

“Having dedicated data centers will give us more capacity to accommodate this growth in users and activity on Twitter,” stated Jean-Paul Cozzatti on the Twitter Engineering Blog.

“Twitter will have full control over network and systems configuration, with a much larger footprint in a building designed specifically around our unique power and cooling needs. The data center will house a mixed-vendor environment for servers running open source OS and applications,” added Cozzatti.

As of right now Twitter is using data centers built by NTT America in the Bay Area of California. Twitter will continue to work with NTT. Facebook, Amazon.com, and Google have massive data centers in Oregon and Apple recently announced a new data center being built in North Carolina.

Screen shot 2010 07 22 at 12.33.36 PM Google Changes The Design Of Google Images Search
In 2001, Google launched a revolutionary addition to its search engine: Google Images. At the time, a collection of 250 million images with a single search engine was ground breaking. Google now has an index of over 10 billion images.

Due in part to the growing number of images in Google’s index, the company is planning on changing Google Images. Some of these changes include:

-Dense tiled layout designed to make it easy to look at lots of images at once. This allows for more images and less text.
-Instant scrolling between pages which allows for more images to be seen with only scrolling. Up to 1,000 images will be added per scrolling page, with individual pages being numbered.
-Larger thumbnail previews on the results page, designed for modern browsers and high-res screens.
-A hover pane that appears when you put your mouse over a thumbnail image, giving a larger preview, more info about the image and other image-specific features such as “Similar images.”

These updates will be added to Google soon and it shows that the search engine company is continuing to evolve. Google’s Product Manager Nate Smith said “We hope they not only make it easier to search for images, but also contribute to a better aesthetic experience. We see images as a major source of inspiration, a way of connecting the world—aand their growth is showing no signs of slowing down.”

general motors logo General Motors To Buy AmeriCredit Corporation For $3.5 Billion
Despite the Chapter 11 bankruptcy, General Motors has soared from the ashes to acquire AmeriCredit Corp. for $3.5 billion in order to get back into the credit business. Of course GM’s survival might not have been possible without the $57.6 billion TARP program.

GM car dealers will then have more options to lease and finance car sales. GM is buying AmeriCredit Corp. in an all-cash transaction that is valued at $24.50 per share. AmeriCredit will fill the role that GMAC was once responsible for.

“Adding AmeriCredit to our team will improve our competitiveness in auto financing offerings, and I am very pleased to have them on board,” stated GM CEO Ed Whitacre.

GM has been working with AmeriCredit to set up auto loans for customers that have poor credit ratings. GM will also continue to work with Ally Financial (the former GMAC finance company) for providing loans to customers with good credit. GM is preparing to have an IPO later this year or next year. This transaction is expected to close by the end of the year.

dots for tots 200x300 Dots For Tots – On The Go Connect The Dots FunThe other day I was having lunch with friends who also happened to be parents of small children. While waiting for what seemed like an extraodinarily long time, I found myself whipping out my iPhone in an attempt to entertain the four-year-old munchkin beside me. Google Earth, Facebook, and Sporcle wasn’t exactly going  to do the trick, but since my own kids are far beyond preschool games, my library was a bit understocked at the time. It is times such as this that apps like Dots for Tots come in very handy indeed.

From the makers of Color Me!!, which incidentally I enjoyed and tested out on the same four-year-old munchkin, Dots for Tots is a collection of simple dot-to-dot pages that include numbers, letters, shapes, and animals. Using the numbers 1 – 10 and the touchscreen interface of the iPhone, little fingers can trace and connect the dots to form the image. Granted, they have to be able to recognize numbers and know numerical order, but if they’ve mastered that skill, then you’re golden.(…)
