I just got finished reporting on iCab, an alternate browser for iOS. Now, for those who don’t use Safari or Opera, you should be able to get this other iOS browser known as the Atomic Web Browser. Like iCab, the Atomic Web Browser has many features that are worth reporting about. For example, it has [...]

safari added to homescreen e1303236241559 How to Make Safari Load Faster on the iPhone

Although Safari may not be perfect, as far as truly native iPhone browsers go, it’s all we’ve got. If one of your major problems with Apple’s mobile browser is how long it takes to load, you’re in good company.

It’s Safari’s built-in session saving feature that makes the browser so sluggish. In most cases, it will completely reload you’re previous page you were on at launch. iOS doesn’t have an option to disable this feature, but there might be a way around it…

Mobile Safari Icon e1301586350137 How to Speed Up Web Apps on the iPhone

In iOS 4.3, Apple has supposedly limited the speed of web apps added to the iPhone’s home screen. Develepors and users have been reporting that web-based applications launched from an independent springboard icon are loading more than 2x slower than sites opened in Mobile Safari.

Meaning that, web apps/favorite sites launched from an icon shortcut aren’t given any access to the Nitro Javascript engine that’s baked into iOS 4.3. If Apple has intentionally hampered the performance of web apps in 4.3, such a move could been seen as a subliminal push to get people downloading more App Store apps.

If you’ve noticed lagging performance with your favorite web apps in iOS 4.3, there’s an easy way to take advantage of Mobile Safari’s full resources…(…)

safari home screen 03 16 2011 Web apps found to be lacking Safaris speed bump in iOS 4.3

Well, it looks like you weren’t imagining things if you thought in-app browsers or web apps saved to your iPhone’s home screen seemed slower than Safari itself. Ars Technica has now confirmed that pages or web apps loaded using those methods aren’t receiving the JavaScript boost added to Safari in iOS 4.3, which the site found to be about 2.5 times faster than Safari in iOS 4.2. The problem is that those apps don’t have the necessary permissions to execute dynamically generated native code stored in writeable memory (as Safari does), which basically leaves them running at the same speed they did in iOS 4.2. Not surprisingly, that has prompted some to speculate that it’s all part of a grand plan on Apple’s part to force developers to use full-fledged apps instead of mobile apps, but Ars Technica points out that it could just as easily be due to some technical problems. Hit up the source link below for all the technical details.
