If we referred to an Apple or Android army, you might assume we’re talking about a legion of brand-loyal fanboys, with which most Engadget commenters are intimately familiar. Defense contractors, however, are trying to turn the US Army into a lethal Apple / Android force with soldier-centric apps. Harris Corp. has a tablet app in the works that allows soldiers to control IP cameras on UAVs for more pertinent intel on the ground while simultaneously sending that information to command centers anywhere in the world. Meanwhile, Intelligent Software Solutions aims to bring mapping mashups to the battlefield (no purpose-built device needed) with an app that combines smartphones’ geolocation with historical data to show troops what’s been going down in the area — from IED explosions to insurgent arrests. Best of all, these apps lower training costs since most warriors are already fluent in Android or iOS and the consumer handhelds can be cheaply ruggedized to replace the more robust $10,000 units in the field today. Should protective measures fail, the devices’ (relatively) low replacement cost makes them “almost disposable.”

It has been a while since I reported on Bitbop since I first met them at CTIA, and they have just come to Android.
I got to try them out on BlackBerry, and it delivers streaming of full-length TV shows from Fox, NBC, and other affiliates. It can broadcast through WiFi and 3G, and it will work on the Motorola Droid, HTC Droid Incredible, HTC EVO 4G, Droid 2, Droid X, as well as Nexus One smartphones.
I believe it is still at its going rate of $9.99 monthly, which is about as much as Hulu Plus. There is a free trial for up to three shows a week.

Some of you might know about Skyfire, a Flash-enabled browser that is quite popular amongst Android users. There is still no word of it coming to the iPhone just as yet, but it does have one million users.
I suppose that there isn’t much to say other than that. It does work with a variety of phones such as the HTC EVO 4G, Droid Incredible, Droid X, Droid 2, as well as the Samsung Galaxy S.
Skyfire is currently available in version 2.3.2 from Android.

I believe that we covered how many magazines have turned to iPhone Apps, such as Wired and Time, and Cook’s Illustrated used to be a magazine.
Cook’s Illustrated has 50 of their all-time best recipes, and even has videos and a kitchen timer. It has several taste test reviews for supermarket ingredients.
This is a free download for iOS devices, and the subscribers can get access to the magazine’s online archive through the app.

We have covered a lot of Android tablets here at MobileWhack, like the Viliv X10 and the iWonder Android tablet.
This is the iMito iM7, from Chinese company MAG digital. It has an 800MHz ARM11 TeleChips 8902 processor, 256RAM, 2GB to 32GB of storage space, 1080p full video playback, WiFi, USB OTG 2.0 interface, not to mention (and I already have) Android, version 2.1, to be exact.
All of this is wrapped up in a 7-inch (800 x 480) resistive touchscreen display. There is no word on pricing or availability yet, but we’ll see.
