Android – Iphone – Applications

We’ve reported in the past that Apple is looking to update the Maps.app in their iOS software. Outside of turn by turn directions and Street View, the application is fairly limited in its current form. This has allowed other companies like Navigon and TomTom to compete in the App Store with their GPS applications, derived from years of navigation experience.

If Apple is looking to compete with the heavyweights, they really need to beef up the Maps.app’s feature set. Obviously we all hope to see spoken turn by turn directions added, but what other functions would you want in an iOS navigation app?(…)

When Apple unveiled their multitasking bar in iOS 4.0, they were fairly late to the party. As with multiple features, the jailbreak scene had already had multitasking apps like backgrounder out for a while. Although it was belated, a lot of people really took a liking to Apple’s new multitasking support.

Then there are people like me, who are constantly searching for a better alternative for switching between applications. Sure, there are apps like Stacks and Dock that make multitasking easier, but is there anything else available?(…)

It appears that Twitter isn’t the only company snatching up iOS developers this week. Tuaw and several other media sites are reporting that the console gaming giant, Electronic Arts, is planning on purchasing popular iOS developer Firemint.

You might recognize some of Firemint’s work, as they are the developers behind games like Flight Control and the Real Racing franchise. Neither game was a stranger to the top 25 list in the App Store. What could they have to gain by joining up with EA?

That’s right folks, the silky smooth Cydia alternative is back up and running. For folks who have been around the jailbreak scene for a while, you undoubtedly remember Icy. The dpkg installer worked similar to Cydia, but always seemed faster and more refined than its counterpart.

Since Cydia and Rock joined forces, there really hasn’t been any competition in the jailbroken app store industry. Icy is looking to change that by returning to the scene with a fresh coat of paint. Does it have what it takes to be a worthy challenger after being gone for so long?(…)

Apple has been dropping firmware updates like they were going out of style lately. Just 2 months after iOS 4.3 was released, a third update is on the horizon. Luckily, the jailbreaks are keeping up with the releases, but are you?

While most folks don’t appreciate rebuilding their iPhone, I relish it. I love starting with a clean slate and making my iPhone look completely different than it did before. If you haven’t upgraded to a recent firmware in fear of losing all of your stuff in Cydia, check this out…(…)
