Sometimes you can tell, from just as little as looking at a phone’s name, what its primary purpose is. The Motorola RAZR, for example, was geared to be slim and sharp in nature. And today, we’ve got a look at another cell phone whose name gives its purpose away–the Motorola ROKR.

The Motorola ROKR is heavy on the music, featuring a music player that’s actually really, really good. Beyond that, it’s a candy bar style phone that also offers voice recorder, conference call capability, speakerphone, Bluetooth connectivity, a full-size 3.5mm headset jack, two gigs of onboard memory, mobile web, text messaging, a variety of downloadable content (games, ring tones, audio and video files, among others), a two megapixel camera with 8x digital zoom, and a battery that yields seven and a half hours of talk time on a single charge.

Now, the music player on this does pretty well–though admittedly, two gigs isn’t a great whopping lot of room for even MP3s–but what really gets me that this phone offers up a whole lot more than that. It’s not just an MP3 player with a phone in it, as you might think from the name, but it’s more like a phone that offers up plenty of options.

The down side to this phone, though, is the control scheme.  It’s extremely difficult to get used to, and will probably hamper your earliest efforts to get to know it just as it did mine.  But if you can get the hang of it, you’ll find that the Motorola ROKR has quite a lot to offer.

The Good

Fantastic music playing capability

Great battery life

The Bad

Horrible control scheme

Score 7 / 10
