Android – Iphone – Applications

ParkingBreak is a version of the classic parking game made for the iPhone with a touch of comic style graphics and funny emotions mixed in. The game has over 90 levels and features a character called ORZ. Graphics and animations are very nicely done. The cars have facial expressions which reminds us of the animated flick Cars a little bit, although the graphics are definitely too detailed.

Most features of the game are like the basic parking lot game, where you are faced with a crowded parking lot filled with cars head to head that you have to maneuver to get your ride out. The only annoying thing about ParkingBreak is that the levels don’t get saved so when you open the app, you have to start all over again each time. If the developer adds a resume feature it would make this a much better buy, but it is still not a bad deal for under a buck.

Cluck It is a fun Frogger style iPhone game where you help a Chicken help her baby chicks cross the road and head to school. To move the chicken all you have to do is tap the iPhone screen, so learning to play the game is super simple. There are anywhere from 2 to 8 lanes of cars on the street depending on how deep into the 50 levels you get.

Once you cross one chick over you have to come back across the street to send the remaining chicks to school. You only have to move vertically on the screen, the game does the horizontal movements for you, in other words the chicken runs away from cars coming towards it. That is until you run out of room or get boxed in, so be sure to avoid that. The game has a bonus feature if you “hood hop” on top of cars as you jump right in front of them, just close enough to not get hit. This is a really tough thing to figure out at first, as your timing has to be almost perfect for a hood hop. You can even chain your hood hops if you can get your chicken hop skills up that high.

The soundtrack is a feel good mariachi song, without the singing, which makes the game even more enjoyable. The quotes in the game are also well thought out. For example when you finish a level, you get to “count your chickens” as the app tallies up your score. There is also a time limit in Cluck It, which only became an issue for us when getting to the 5 lane levels.

Cluck It, is a perfect little time waster game that is addictive, and super fun to play. The graphics are cartoon like and are just shy of being perfect. The gameplay is super smooth and the landscape mode works perfectly on the iPhone. We only could wish for more added bonus actions, and road types perhaps, but for what it offers, you really can’t go wrong with this featured app. A job well done by Curios Bear productions.

The long awaited official Flickr app is finally here and ready for free download from the iTunes App Store, from the people at Yahoo. The app lets you do all of the most common tasks including search for photos or videos by keyword, write comments, share photos, geo-tag pics, add your photos to sets and even upload photos you’ve take on your iPhone to your Flickr account.

When you load the app for the first time it grabs your location. Then it starts to do a slideshow of random images in the fading and sliding flavor of the Mac screensaver, which is quite pleasing by itself.

There are 3 main tabs: Recent, shows activity in your account, You shows your photos and sets, and Contacts a list of all your Flickr buddies iPhone style.

The Flickr app also now lets you view your friends, their photos and mark as favorites. The Flickr iPhone app now basically puts its entire photo library in your hands at all times, giving you an endless stream of viewing pleasure and exploration. Since there is some mildly adult content on this app, it is rated 12+ by the App Store.

So what’s missing in the first release of the Flickr app you ask?
- You can’t download photos from the app to your iPhone. Think of all the cool iPhone wallpapers you could easily create if this was an option.
- Although geo-tagging is done, it could be a bit more accurate, by using the actual time a photo was taken in the tag.
- For now you can’t explore the “interesting” photos in the Flickr app, we miss this one a lot.
- No Photo editing feature yet, as expected
- Can’t delete photos after uploading them
- Can’t edit the properties of your photos form the iPhone app yet.
- Although you can upload photos, you can’t upload them in batches, for now.
- Can’t zoom in on any photo as you might expect by pinch/pan action
- Max of only 45 sets are displayed
- Push notifications: would be great to get messages when contacts upload photos etc.
- Local search, although the app uses your location, it doesn’t make a point to show you local photos currently

Overall, we like the initial effort form Flickr and the fact that its free. Version 1.01 is done, but that app is not complete yet, and will more that likely go through its share of feature upgrades in the coming months.

As a side note: Flickr has also had a Mobile Safari optimized portal for iPhone users which is still available by going to http://m.flickr.com from Safari on your iPhone or iPod touch.
