Photo Feb 01 4 55 24 AM 300x225 Infinity Field ReviewDual-stick shooters are numerous on the App Store, so if you want to stand out, you have to get the basics right and then build your own ideas on top of it to make it perfect. Infinity Field features a standard setup – kill enemies of various colors and geometric shapes before they kill you. There are a variety of modes to do this in, standard ‘shoot everything that moves and survive as long as possible’ modes with several variations on enemy formations, a couple of modes where you can only kill enemies by detonating bombs, and a Snake mode puts you in control of a snake that has a laser between its head and tail, so you have to maneuver in a way to that will kill the enemies with that laser.

Infinity Field’s variety is its greatest strength. The 6 game modes give you plenty of different ways to play the game, each different in their own way. The game’s campaign mode is also a great way to practice the game’s mechanics, as it takes you through the game’s various modes and challenges you to hone your survival skills, and gives you a reason to return to the game besides achievements and high scores. But, if you do love to collect those things, Game Center and Crystal are implemented in the game, along with a list of the top 4 scores in each mode, to give you something to shoot towards. The engine is impressive, cranking out tons of bullets and enemies in an engine with some 3D playing field effects (that can be disabled in the game’s comprehensive options menu) without ever slowing down in anyway. In what is likely a first for dual-stick shooters on iOS, the game also supports 2-player play on a single device, as you and another player compete for a high score, with each player’s controls on each side of the device. The game will also support remote control of the game with an iPhone/iPod touch in a future update, as well.

This isn’t the most original game in the world, but it feels like it borrows more liberally than other games in the genre. The dual stick controls are a bit less accurate than in other games – I felt like I was often accidentally running into enemies because of the controls. Also, iPhone and iPod touch owners are currently out of the loop with the game, as it is iPad-only for the moment.

Infinity Field may lack in the originality department, but it does not lack in the fun department. It outclasses even the iOS version of Geometry Wars in many ways, coming feature-packed and getting a lot right. This is one of the best dual-stick shooters for the iPad, and is definitely worth a look if you need a good action game on your iPad.

Speed. Urgency. Panic.

IMG 1013 300x200 Neo Defender 2 ReviewMy mind shifted at some point between levels from the fear of death to an unconquerable urge to relieve my bladder. Once sane thought re-entered my brain, I realized that I was positioned in some sort of cave man hunch over my iPhone that was laying flat, with my tongue out like I was the Michael Jordan of geometric shape destruction. Both of my index fingers were slightly sore, reminding me of the fact that I had been playing Neo Defender 2 for the past hour and a half. After plodding through a sea of average apps, I was finally a happy gamer.

Conceptually, Neo Defender 2 is one of the simpler games in the App Store. You are a ball-like object in the middle of the screen with two touch controlled cannons, and it is up to you to destroy the incoming enemies. Some enemies take more hits to kill while others split when you strike them… but they all need to be dead. It’s a dog eat dog world out there.

The real joy of the game is that none of the weapons are automatic, which forces you to really get down and grind. Sure, you could probably play the game with two thumbs (on easy) and look normal, but Neo Defender 2 really needs to be played with some fast striking index fingers. My strategy throughout was to have one finger command the left side of the screen while the other commands the right, but occasionally things would break down when a mass of creeps would come swarming from the same side. All the while you have a few bonus weapons that you can select and fire, but diverting your attention from the swarm isn’t usually the best strategy… hitting the baddies with raw power is.

To add some icing on the cake, Neo Defender 2 gives you a nifty weapon upgrade tree for spending some earned cash between levels. You can buy things like nukes, missiles, shields, and health, but I tend to spend my money on the heavy guns. Lasers that shoot through enemies and the mega cannon that mows down entire screen are the items for me, and Neo Defender has no shortage of big weapons.

In the end, if you like frantic action gaming on the iPhone, you’ll absolutely love Neo Defender 2. Just don’t try to play a quick game on your morning commute – you’ll look deranged.

Slice It App Review: Slice it!

Slice it! , created by Com2uS, is a game that initially stirred up my attention by the iTunes App Store ratings. The current version has 106 ratings at 5 stars with 9045 ratings at 4.5 stars. Those are some pretty impressive stats aren’t they?

I can’t remember the last time I saw an app with ratings this high and would love some recommendations of other games with these kinds of ratings!

Anyways, Slice it! is a puzzle game that puts your Geometry skills to the test. I must admit, in High school I hated Geometry and barely did enough to get by, but don’t worry! You won’t be doing any Pi x Radius calculations but you will find yourself planning ahead and visualizing your strategy to achieve the most amount of stars possible… Read More
