neunotes app 224x300 neu.Notes for iPad Organizes Your Thoughts, But StaysNow and then you happen across an app that gives you something mindbogglingly simple yet so functional that you soon wonder how you ever got along without it. Other times, you happen across an app that leaves out so many no-brainers that you find yourself shouting at your iPad screen like an overly immersed audience member at a horror movie: “No! Don’t go in the basement… *sigh* Why do they always go in the basement…” neu.Notes for iPad is the rare app that combines both reactions.

First, let’s talk about what neu.Notes for iPad does: it lets you sketch and hand-write on your sketch. You can also import pictures and maps, edit them with different colored brushes (no snazzy special effects,) then export them. One thing to note is that neu.Notes is a vector-based app, rather than a raster “paint” app. This is no big deal when you’re working on your iPad—in fact, it’s nice because it means that you can zoom in super close without worrying about trying to decipher pixelated notes or a fuzzy mind-map. However, the downside is that if you export the document all the heavy lifting will have to be done in Illustrator or another vector drawing program. In a pinch, you can work on a raster version of your skech by sending it to yourself as a .png.

Here are the mindbogglingly simple yet functional features that makes neu.Notes worthy of a spot in your productivity toolbox. Because neu.Notes is supposed to be a productivity app, not just a quick fingersketching doodle-pad, a lot of attention has been paid to the ability to organize your notes and sketches. (…)

mzl.ywmvdyal.480x480 75 225x300 The Real New York Times Is Now On The iPadRemember the olden days (yesterday) when the crummy iPad version of the New York Times was just an abridged version called “editor’s choice?” Well not anymore! With the latest update (2.0), the New York Times app now shows more than 25 sections from the famed paper, as well as 50 NYTimes.com blogs.

All that users have to do to get this new content is to complete a free in-app registration form, or already be a an existing NYTimes member. The catch is that early next year, the NYTimes app will be moving to a subscription model. The Times hasn’t released their price points for the subscription, but the days of free are coming to an end. After the price model hits, freeloaders will be back to just viewing the Top News, Most E-Mailed, Business Day, and video.

“When we go to the pay model, there will always be something you can access without having a paid subscription,” Namini, SVP of marketing and circulation, said. “Whether it will be the free four sections you get without registering or something different, that’s to be determined later. But to access everything in full, a paid subscription will be required.”

Like all newspapers, the New York Times iPad edition, even after the price model hits, will keep on its advertising, and is in fact sold out for almost the entirety of next year. Judging by how popular the “Editor’s Choice” app was (it was downloaded 650,000 times since April), it would be crazy for them to not jump on board. This is the New York Times after all.

So feel free to drop your silly Kindle subscriptions any time now. With the new update, you can view the New York Times, in its entirety, in color. Now isn’t that pretty?

TED Releases iPad App

Uncategorized | 5 views No Comments »

TED iPad 1 300x219 TED Releases iPad AppTED, if you haven’t heard of it, is a global collection of conferences that was originally focused on new and innovative ideas in the realm of technology and design, but now has spilled over into great ideas in any field. Starting in 1984, TED was created to provide a platform for “ideas worth spreading”, and has since had famous speakers including Bill Gates, Al Gore, the founders of Google, and (huh?) Sarah Silverman.

Because of its astronomical ticket prices (upwards of $5,000 a pop), most of the fans of TED view the conferences either through the TED website or via podcast. According to a Wikipedia stat, the conference is hugely popular, having been viewed by more than 290 million people worldwide, and the number is growing at a rapid pace.

Since TED started as a tech influenced conference, it comes at no surprise that they have released their very own iPad app, available for free in the App Store. The app lets you view all the TED videos (in hi or lo res), create playlists, get recommendations on things to watch, and even download videos for offline viewing.

“The ability to hold onto some videos for offline viewing when I’m on a plane or train, or otherwise offline, is awesome.” said Matt Drance, developer of the TED iPad app. “I never thought I’d learn so much staring at my iPad for hours at a time!”

With more than 700 TEDTalk videos to pour through (and more coming every week), the TED app will certainly keep fans of the conference captivated for quite some time. Pick it up for free in the app store today.
