iPhone 4 Black White1 White iPhone 4 Cancelled?

When you think the drama is almost over, some good ol’ rumors show up, throwing yet a little more oil on the fire. According to BGR and their insider ninjas, Apple has absolutely no plan of ever releasing the white iPhone 4.

The plan is actually to delay the White iPhone 4 again in the Spring, which would inevitably lead us to an iPhone 5 release… Read More

iPhone SIM tray opener Apple Looking Into Dumping iPhone Carriers?Speaking of a close environment… There is an interesting article on GigaOM today which suggests that Apple might be about to cut out the carriers.

Apparently Apple is working with SIM manufacturer Gemalto to create a unique SIM card that would be integrated inside the phone and that would allow people to buy the iPhone directly from Apple and choose a carrier via the App Store… Read More

mzl.lcedvgjq.320x480 75 300x200 Favorite Four – Scariest Apps 2010With Halloween coming, it is once again time to find the creepiest games of the year. Last years list included some great apps, but by now we all need something new to play in the middle of the night. The following list makes up the creepiest of 2010… well, except for the last one. Enjoy!

Soul

Soul is, without a doubt, the scariest maze game that I’ve ever played, and possibly the scariest game period. The game starts you as a soul coming out of a dead body in a mortuary, faintly illuminating your path through the worlds creepiest, filthiest hand drawn environments. It’ll scare the bejeebers out of you for sure.

Unfortunately the game is plagued with an extremely unforgiving accelerometer based control system, and could really use an autosave feature. I hate recommending the “easy” setting, but I would definitely consider starting on it in Soul.

The whole experience is so horrifying and pretty though that I don’t feel too bad putting up with a few flaws. If you really want to be scared, Soul will deliver.

Prisoner 84

It definitely has its flaws, such as the mucky controls, slightly ugly looking characters, iffy path finding, and repetitive floor plans, but boy is it creepy. Put on a pair of headphones and you’ll be jumping out of your seat more often than just about any other iOS game out there.

Prisoner 84 starts with you in solitary confinement in an offshore prison (with extremely limited lighting) where everyone is mysteriously dead… or undead. You have to fight your way out of the prison, literally blowing the flesh off of bad guys to find your way. The whole this is quite disturbing, and as far as small screen gaming goes, this one might be as scary as it gets.

Aftermath

Aftermath may not be as scary as some of the other games on the list, but it’s an extremely well crafted dual stick, zombie killing shooter. The real killer here is the morbid atmosphere. Maps are filled with muck and grime, rain is constantly falling, and everything is dark. So dark in fact that your combat is based on finding the enemies with your flashlight.

The only major flaw of the game, in my opinion, is its lack of depth. If it had more levels/if the levels were longer, I’d be extremely happy… er, scared.

Texting of the Bread

Now if you really want to talk about scary, try going up against ravenous armies of gingerbread zombies armed only with a milk gun.

If you’ve ever played Typing of the Dead on any of the various platforms that it was on, you’ll know exactly what you’re getting with Texting of the Bread. Simply text as fast as you can to defeat the evil gingerbread zombies. It’s fun, educational (in a texting sort of way… you never know, maybe they’ll teach it in school one day), and might possibly scare those with severe gluten allergies.

Special Mention – Hysteria Project 2 – Hysteria Project 2 has yet to be released (as of Oct. 5), but it looks to continue the extreme creepiness that the first one brought. Assuming it’s close to the same game, prepare for a creepy, fully cinematic horror game that has you frantically running from an unknown man with a hatchet. The original was one of the creepiest games of ‘09, so I’m sure the sequel would’ve found itself on the list if it were out in time.

Power Pool Review

There are basically two types of pool players, those who carefully line up each shot while weighing factors such as angles, velocity and table speed, and then those who simply whack the balls as hard as possible and hope for the best. If you fall into the latter camp then Power Pool may be just the game for you, as it eschews all the strategy and calculation of a traditional game of billiards in favor of fast-paced action.

power pool 2 200x300 Power Pool ReviewPower Pool is a single-player affair, wherein you merely fire the cue ball around the extremely small table in the hopes of pocketing all the other balls. The game’s big twist is that some balls contain power-ups, and thus the whole experience is spiced up a bit. One upgrade may make your cue ball huge, allowing you to clear the table quickly, while another might set off an explosion that will send all the balls in the area rocketing out in all directions at top speed. These power-ups are the game’s saving grace, as without them this would be one of the most boring, mindless apps in existence. It’s still pretty mindless of course, but at least it’s not boring.

Unfortunately for Power Pool, after only a couple games most players will likely find the app tedious, offering little more than mindless action in short spurts. While there are Achievements and leader boards, so much of each round consists of little more than luck that a high score really doesn’t mean all that much. When a 3 year-old can easily post the same score as a 30 year-old, that doesn’t leave much to brag about.

Further hamstringing the game are the fidgety controls, which leave no room for finesse. Every shot is absolute full power, so good luck making the finer shots into corners and off the rails. Instead you’re likely to bounce the ball all over creation and chase the last ball or two around the table for a while as you try and just make the last blasted shot to clear the level. While the full-tilt speed works as an asset for the duration of most rounds, it also turns into a nasty liability at times.

The funny thing about this app is that Power Pool is already available for free at Ninja Kiwi’s website, making this version feel kind of redundant. This game is really only for those who absolutely adore Power Pool for one reason or another and feel the compulsion to take it with them everywhere they go; the rest of us aren’t missing out on much.

It seems people just can’t get enough of flinging birds at pigs, especially if those birds happen to be dressed up in Halloween costumes. Rovio has stated that the Halloween edition of Angry Birds has sold a million copies in just six days, one of the fastest trips to a million we’ve ever seen. The physics puzzle game is clearly far from dead on the iPhone.

angry birds halloween 300x200 Angry Birds Halloween Sells a Million“We’re delighted to see such fantastic reception for Angry Birds Halloween,” said Rovio CEO Mikael Hed. “We intend to continue creating more and more quality products and updates, and keep exceeding the expectations of our fans worldwide.”

Of course the massive success of Rovio’s first post-Chillingo offering raises an interesting question, did EA buyout the wrong company? Though Chillingo published Angry Birds, all ownership rights remained with Rovio in light of the EA sale, and therefore the developer retained all rights for future expansions, sequels and spinoffs. Even though EA spent $20 million on Chillingo the deal didn’t include the very game that made the publisher famous. The same is true for the recently released Cut the Rope, which, as far as we know, remains the property of ZeptoLab. Could it be that EA spent top dollar for an iPhone developer and then missed the forest for the trees? It would seem unlikely, but then again the world of developing and selling apps is still in its infancy, and no one truly understands the relationship between studios yet. Chillingo is undoubtedly working on titles of its own to publish under the EA banner, but can they live up to the successes set by earlier games?

In spite of all the drama surrounding EA and Chillingo we do want to congratulate Rovio on selling so many copies of Angry Birds Halloween so quickly. Truly one of the great success stories of the Wild West of app development.
