Gowalla has always been celebrated for its beauty edge when it comes to social-networking LBS apps. However, the iPhone 4 has just allowed it to achieve supermodel status. Gowalla has taken the retina display in the new and improved device to produce sharp, high resolution graphics and is updating every single element of the app until it is aesthetically stunning. This means that if you were previously ambivalent about the pins you received, you will now want to acquire them just because they and the app are so beautiful.

Other improvements to Gowalla include multitasking support, which allows fast app switching and continuous updates of nearby spots, and localization features so that you can elect languages appropriate to your area (French, German, Spanish, Japanese, and Arabic) in addition to English. Furthermore, Gowalla has enabled smoother Facebook and Twitter connectivity and has implemented address book integration, making it easier to register and connect with your friends.
The Gowalla update has already been seen in the news; it has supported the CNN and Larry King Life Gulf Coast Telethon, handed out special World Cup pins and trips, and teamed up with USA Today to bring travel info and airport guides to the app. With all of its new, fancy tricks, attractive updates, and superstar endorsements, it is certainly giving Foursquare a run for its money. So, Gowalla users on the iPhone 4 — what do you think of the improvements? Is it edging out the competition?

It is truly amazing to think how far technology has come. Whereas, not too long ago, electricity was a novelty, you can now use tiny handheld devices to manipulate it. I don’t know why I was shocked by my discovery of Control4 My House, but the thought of being able to operate most, if not all, household apparatuses with the touch of an iPhone was pretty mindblowing. Control4 My House operates by having an automation system installed in your house; then all you have to do is download the app and you can control everything from lights to your TV and sound system. It also gives you information about what you’re controlling (e.g. movie synopses, album details, etc.)! Now you won’t have to worry about leaving a light on or needing to set something from across your house, and the fear of misplacing or confusing your countless remotes is an issue of the past. All you need is your iPhone, and everything is under control.

The Relax and Rest Guided Meditations app is one that will serve the average person who has never meditated before and those who are more experienced with meditation. It gives you three different meditation options, the quick 5 minute rest, the 13 minute deep rest and the 24 minute whole body rest that can be used during your lunch break, at home or right before bed.
The best thing about the app is that it is simple and easy to use. The interface is very compatible with the fact that its a meditation app, the app does everything it can to make you feel as relaxed as possible. It also gives you the choice to have simply music playing or to have both music and a voice playing while you meditate and tips on how to maximize each meditation option. I think its a great app because it doesn’t require prior experience with meditation. I would be really surprised if it was used only by people who meditate regularly, I don’t and I was drawn to the apps’ simplicity and appealing interface. 0.99 cents is a small price to pay to be able to relax whenever and wherever you want. In my opinion, the app is definitely worth it!

Just when you thought you were safe from to-do lists and constant nagging, another medium emerged: HoneyDo. This iPhone app takes your to-do list a few steps further by enabling others to assign you tasks and duties through the app, complete with due dates, messaging capabilities (to discuss, argue, elaborate upon said task), and numerous ways to describe and act upon your chores. What’s refreshing about the app, however, is that it also enables users to provide “gift” incentives for completing items, reject tasks that others send them, share task lists (so that others can “motivate” you to get things done), and organize all lists according to various criteria. The app also enables you to create groups, which could be seen to facilitate nagging, but also creates an environment that makes taking care of tasks more collaborative, fun, and easy. The way I see it is that maybe, just maybe, this app is the answer to verbal altercations regarding who needs to do what; all petty disputes can be settled via iPhone (and at great distances if need be) so that face-to-face time can be much more civilized. Finally, and possibly the best part: now when you check off your chores as “done”, that awesome sense of accomplishment you normally feel internally is magnified by the fact that everyone on your HoneyDo list automatically sees just how productive you can be.

Everyone knows, whether they like it or not, that math is the most important subject in school. Even if you don’t think you need it for your career, chances are you’re going to run into situations where knowing math really helps pretty often. As I wrote before, education apps are becoming more common and technology is no stranger to teachers and classrooms these days. So of course there are tons of apps for teaching kids mathematics being developed. Many of these apps are directed at children still in elementary school and feature simple lessons about basic arithmetic. There are also several apps that cover all the bases, from elementary math to calculus and linear algebra. Growing up I was very much into math but everyone else wasn’t, so when I used a few of these apps I thought about how helpful these apps would have been for people who didn’t quite “get” it. Here are a few apps that piqued my interest through their potential for classroom use:
Math Ref

This app is an excellent tool for classroom use. It comes with tons of basic equations from a wide range of fields in mathematics, from high school geometry to college-level linear algebra and calculus. Also included in the app are formulas from other fields like physics and chemistry, as well as a periodic table of elements. Developers have recently included a financial equations section, making this a good resource for economics classes. I think this app would be a great tool in the classroom. It comes with a ton of useful equations, but it leaves the explanations in the hands of the teacher.
Mathemagics

Mathemagics – Mental Math Tricks, unlike the previous app, is better suited for students’ use at home. It teaches quick ways to perform not-so-simple arithmetic functions in your head, then tests you so that you can get practice. Although I found some of the formulas to be slightly overcomplicated, it’s a fun way to improve kids’ math skills in that it teaches them alternatives to the standard methods being taught at school and motivates them to practice their math skills. This app breathes new life into something most kids find either boring or difficult.
There are plenty of other apps that I would consider to be useful in the classroom or as a learning tool outside of the classroom…in fact, too many to list. If you search the app store, there are dozens of flashcard apps for kids just starting to learn math. With so many resources available and so many people already with the technology, it’s a wonder that these apps aren’t already being used in classrooms. But as more and more people move into the mobile age, I think we’ll see a lot more apps like these being developed and used by educators.
