mzl.nnthnuru.100x100 75 Biased LaserA lot of buzz has been circulating around the RedLaser controversy. The app, which has prided itself on being one of the best barcode readers and shop-smart tools, was recently bought by Ebay. While this has made the previously paid app free, it has also introduced questions about bias. Since the app is meant to give you to great deals on products and introduce you to items of interest by scanning certain products, it is now a valid question that RedLaser may not be drawing from all suppliers out there, and may in fact only be linking to Ebay’s endorsers. Therefore, their claims of searching everyone out there to bring you the best prices may not be completely accurate because of their link to the famous online shopping engine. Even though the amount Ebay paid for control of RedLaser is unknown, the fact of the matter is RedLaser is now Ebay’s product, and has effectively turned from one of the most popular iPhone apps into a source of contention. What do you think — is RedLaser tainted forever by this business deal, or do you trust it to resist corruption?

mzl.quqguoba.100x100 75 DoodleJump — Not So AddictiveOne of the top games right now is Doodlejump. With the subtitle, “BE WARNED: Insanely Addictive!”, how could it not be? Naturally, I did not heed the warning, and instead I wanted to see just how hard it would be to put the game down. Well…given how much the “challenge” was built up, it was not so difficult at all. Basically all the game entails is some sort of alien character that jumps from platform to platform, racking up points the higher it goes, occasionally shooting at UFOs and whatnot, and avoiding falling to its death. This actually makes it sound a bit more exciting than it is. While it is fun and the doodle-based graphics are neat and intriguing, I would not go so far to say it’s addicting, and I would certainly not dare to put that in the title. The fact that it is so high up on the Top Paid Games list seems to me to be due to a great job by the game’s marketing team, as with a subtitle like that, it’s bound to pique some interest. My high expectations for the game were not met — were yours? Have you been able to take a break from DoodleJump?

If you haven’t already noticed, we’ve recently made a few changes to the website.  Not big changes, just minor tweaks to improve the our site’s ability to help you find what you’re looking for.  First of all, we’ve improved the search function on our website.  If you just want to search for an app, you can type in the name of the app and the search will immediately display links to a review or description of the app.  If you’ve decided to buy the app, the review or description of the app already includes a link to the app in the app store.  Secondly, whereas the top of the left bar used to show links to our Facebook and Twitter pages, we now list our most recent blogs and reviews at the top.  Finally, we’ve added the “recently reviewed” tab under the “sort by” menu on our main page.

We’re doing it to make it easier for you to navigate our website, so try it out and let us know your thoughts about it on our forums.

The App Store is a wondrous place where you can find applications for nearly everything. One of the best features of the App Store is the customer ratings and reviews because they enable you to see what users find noteworthy, what is a waste of space, and what is worth investing in. However, some developers take advantage of this system to promote their product through biased reviews of their products. Even if their app is not so hot, they write raving reviews and hire PR agencies to give glowing accolades that are inaccurate and misguiding at best. And to worsen the situation, some developers even give intentionally bad reviews to competition apps to deter consumers from investing in them. This is an issue that needs to be addressed. Since there is such a huge volume of apps in the App Store (over 200,000 and growing by the second), it is important for people to know how to navigate through it, understand which apps actually contain the quality they claim, and be able to accurately decide which apps are best for them. People need to be able to rely on app feedback for guidance, and while it should not have to come to this, they should also be aware of the existence of faulty reviews so that they can recognize which statements are valid and which are not. Furthermore, if Apple wants to continue to be revered among its customers, they should find a way to prevent biased reviews and punish developers who excessively rely on them (e.g. by banning their apps). Finally, developers, if you want people to buy your product, good marketing is essential, but a good product is crucial. Put more money and effort into making a quality app and establishing rapport among your buyers and you won’t need to resort to conniving tactics. Let the product speak for itself.
