Android – Iphone – Applications

Whether you’re hoping to gain a little bit of insight into your life or just trying to make yourself appear well-read in front of your acquaintances, philosophy is generally a good place to start.  But for many reasons, a lot of us simply don’t have the time to read through Buddhist texts or the works of Socrates.  With PhilosoQuote, you can at least have some snippets of wisdom from a few of history’s greatest thinkers with you on the fly.

PhilosoQuote has quotes from 11 remarkable thinkers, including sayings from Aristotle, Sun Tzu, and Albert Einstein.  You can view quotes from an individual thinker which will come at random every time you press the new quote button, or you can select the random tab and read the philosophers at random.  You can also save your favorite quotes to your iPhone and read them again later in the bookmarks tab.

The selection of quotes is large and I ended up saving a surprisingly long list of quotes.  However, I did wish that the app came with more quotes from more philosophers.  There are plenty of great philosophers whose words are just as inspiring as those of the people quoted in the app but who were not included, like John Stuart Mill, Confucius, and Gandhi.  Also, the app fails to recognize when duplicates of bookmarked quotes are created, so when you accidentally save a quote you’ve already saved, it appears twice on the list of bookmarks.  But despite these issues, this app is a nice addition for any iPhone or iPod Touch (especially because it’s free).

Here is an app that makes a lot of sense. The MoviesNow app for the iphone and ipad is so useful and easy to use it makes me wish I was more of a movie buff. For the small price of 1.99 you can get everything you need to be able to walk right into a movie theatre without worrying about long ticket lines. The MoviesNow app will tell you everything you need to know about an upcoming movie or one that is already in theaters. You can search through a list of top box office, just released, also in theaters movies to make a quick decision about what you want to see right away. My favourite part of the app is the feature that allows you to watch trailers in high quality and compose a wish list of the movies you are most excited to see. Another great feature on this app is the option to buy movie tickets or it will send you to movietickets.com where you can access your account and buy your ticket. But, you can just store your credit card information on the app making buying movie tickets so much easier. To make going to the movies an even more efficient experience, you can add your favourite theaters to your favourites list, even though using your location, the app automatically compiles a list of theaters closest to you (with maps!) to choose from. I would highly recommend this app and I definitely think it is worth the 1.99.

The best thing about this app is its organization; there isn’t a lot of extra stuff, ads, etc, that you have to go through to get what you want from this app, its all right there. However, I would say it is an app for someone who knows, or has an idea about what kind of movie they want to watch. It shows you the average viewers rating out of five stars but it does not give you immediate access to written reviews. I would say its not a negative component to the app but something to consider if you are the kind of person who goes by reviews. I was definitely impressed by the app and could definitely see myself using it regularly, just the other day I was held up in line buying a movie ticket for a movie I was already late for, so I definitely understand the appeal of this app and would make a lot of use out of the features it offers. I give this app two thumbs up!

With the increasing use and acceptance of mobile technology in classrooms, teachers and students continually gain access to more and better resources for whatever subject is being covered.  Laptops are a common site in most college classrooms and professors have already taken advantage of online education resources.  So far this adaptation of technology has been successful and developers are now attempting to achieve the same success in the age of mobile technology.  A nice and polished example of these tools is EMD PTE.  EMD PTE is a new education app compatible with both the iPhone and the iPad which provides teachers and students extensive information about the periodic table of the elements.

This app is a great tool for both teachers and students.  Chemistry teachers can use it as a reference for their lessons or to plan and check assignments.  Students can use this app to help them with their assignments, to study for their exams, or just as a reference in situations outside of the classroom.

EMD PTE comes with a periodic table with a general description, basic chemical information, an image of the discoverer, and (for the more stable elements) a picture.  It also comes with a large amount of functions.  Hit the menu button and you can choose to distinguish on the table elements with specific atomic properties, different states at room temperature, year of discovery, and more.  The app also comes with a list which ranks the elements by property.  So you can list the elements by number, density, electronegativity, etc.  The vibrant display helps to distinguish specific parts of the table and makes the aspects of the elements more memorable.

What I like most about this app is that it’s a polished product.  The display is clear and easy-to-use, the app provides extensive information about each element, and it gives interesting new visualizations of the table.  The app is also multilingual so all the information can be shared with ESL (English as a Second Language) students easily, ensuring they don’t get left behind.  The only problem I found with it was that the table was missing some of the more recently discovered elements.  But such information can be updated at a later point.  If you’re looking for a great reference tool for learning or teaching science in high school or in college, this app is a great addition.

Want to discover New York City? Do you have specific things to get done, businesses that you need to find? Well, here it is. NYC Way the ultimate, all inclusive app about New York City. The specific nature of the search criteria is what initially struck me about this app. There is a feature that will search for juice joints, for example, in the city and tell you which one is closest to you. This app stands apart from those of its kind because of that search criteria, you could look for a job, a juice joint and an apartment all in the same app. You also have the opportunity to save your “places” in the “My Places” part of the app in order to keep track of businesses that you don’t want to forget about.

It really does have all the information you could need about New York City and its displayed in a fun, colourful and easy to use way. The app has received a lot of attention, even having been endorsed by the Mayor of New York. I am not a native New Yorker but I get the sense that this app gives you a lot of good ideas, and tools for navigating through the streets of New York all the while allowing you to get everything you need done. If you spend time in New York or are from there but are looking to expand your knowledge of the city, download this app and I really don’t think you could go wrong, it is free after all.
