photo 15 225x300 Flip Note for iPad ReviewVirtual notepad apps have become something of a rage on the iPad recently, and with good reason. Why carry around all of your notes in binders, notebooks and legal pads when you can consolidate all of them in one place? Flip Note for the iPad is the latest entry in this burgeoning category, and while it does several things many competitors do not, it still could use some serious tweaking before it becomes my go-to note-taking app.

Even if you’ve never tried out a notepad app, you can surmise easily what to expect; after all, a notepad is just a series of blank pages, right? Wrong. Apps like Flip Note allow for drawing (either freehand or pre-selected shapes), writing (either by finger or via a stylus), and typing. Once notes are entered, they are saved, and it’s a simple matter to change the page to start new notes at any point. Want to find a note quickly? Just pull up the search box and type in a word or phrase you’re looking for. The built-in search function will locate all pages containing that word or phrase.

It’s a good thing Flip Note contains such a good search feature, since you only get one notebook to work with. This, unfortunately, is a bad design choice. Where I might want separate notebooks for each of several different topics or subject areas, Flip Note forces me to include everything in one. The ability to search everything quickly alleviates this somewhat, but I’d much rather have a system like the one available in PenUltimate, the app which Flip Note will invariably be compared to.

In terms of additional features, it’s worth pointing out that Flip Note allows you to export your pages to email, to a photo or to a text file, and that there is a useful undo feature built into the editor. However, you cannot control font size or pen (ink?) color as you can in PenUltimate, nor can you change from traditional lined paper to graph paper.

Flip Note has pros and cons, and it depends on what you need as to which note-taking app is best for you. I like Flip Note for the ability to add both handwritten and typed notes, but the placement of all notes in one notebook is a deal breaker. If your needs are such that you like keeping everything in one place, you may find Flip Notes to be the best choice.

photo 1 270x203 New York Times App gets a needed updateWe have reported on the New York Times App before, but the response to it has not been favorable.

The previous app, NYT Editor’s Choice, only offered select stories in select sections; arts, tech, and a nice video gallery were offered, but notable omissions abounded. The app always felt good and read well, and conveniently offered downloads for offline reading, but that lack of content looked increasingly shabby next to other news alternatives, relegating the app to a novelty rather than a resource.

This new version of the New York Times App allows users to access the entire newspaper. Perhaps this will set the standard for newspapers online.

Namco has decided it was high time to take the game of Pong, fuse it together with interactive beats, put a pretty coat of paint on it all, and push it out to iOS devices. falling prices 150x150 The Great Inexplicable App Store Game SaleThere’s something to be said for altruistic developers who decrease the prices of their application for no real reason. Although Monday marks official Cinnamon Roll Day and World Animal Day, somehow I don’t think that’s why prices have been lowered. Similarly, I thought that it might be Back to School sales, but with most of the applications games and entertainment related, that doesn’t quite add up either. Turns out that Apple itself initiated this Big Games, Great Prices sale in the App Store, but we’re still not sure what the reason is. We’re gonna go with “Cinnamon Roll Day” for now.

Firemint’s Real Racing, awarded 5 stars in our review and our Editor’s Choice badge, is down to $2.99 from the usual $4.99 – a real steal for an application that provides hours of fun and releases your true competitive spirit. EA leads the pack with a Need for Speed Shift reduced from $6.99 to just $0.99, along with Civilization Revolution featuring an equally competitive drop. Prices have also been reduced on FIFA 10, down to $4.99, and NFL 2011, down to $2.99.

Popular games like Peggle, Puzzle Agent, Doom II RPG and Assassin’s Creed II have all been dropped to $0.99 a piece, while Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 2, Doom Resurrection, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Command & Conquer Red Alert feature a new temporary price tag of $1.99.

The list, found originally by Touch Arcade, contains even more price reductions on what appears to be an iPhone / iPod Touch specific sale with nary an iPad game in sight. No matter Apple’s reasoning for having a sale right at this moment, this is good news for the consumers looking for a cheap game for entertainment’s sake. It’s not often that sales of this magnitude come along with no real major holiday nearby, so make the most of it while you can. You can find all the reviews you’ll need linked above.

FlightControl 3m v2 150x150 Flight Control lands over three million sales, $3814.67 a dayEighteen months ago, the then-little-known developer company Firemint published Flight Control – a game where you land increasing quantities of planes on runways with a limited amount of space both on the ground and in air. It was awarded five stars across the board by 148Apps, as well as the Editor’s Choice badge.

Today, Firemint has announced that sales of Flight Control have passed the three million mark – on average, a little over 5500 copies a day are bought by new users for their iPhone or iPod Touch. At $0.99 a piece, with developers earning 70% of revenue, that totals just under $2.1 million for Firemint’s work – or, to put it another way, $3814.67 a day. In other statistics, some two billion planes have been landed according to Flight Control’s online leaderboards, equating to 2548 planes a minute or a little over 42 every second.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced on September 1st that the iPod Touch alone has more than 50% of market share for portable gaming, outselling Nintendo and Sony combined. The App store has already enjoyed over a quarter of a billion downloads to date, reflecting the ever-growing importance of third party application developers and their software.
