Research in Motion has long been a big player in the mobile world but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t faced stark competition. In fact, both Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS have been giving Research in Motion and their line up of BlackBerrys a run for their money for quite some time. While many say that [...]

Your favorite feathered friends who would love nothing than popping the cap on some green porkers have dominated the gaming landscape across iOS, Android, Symbian, and webOS platforms, leaving only the Blackberry and Windows Phone 7 operating systems as the remaining outcasts. We do know that BlackBerry owners are still very far away from an [...]

Gemalto to cram in Facebook onto a SIM cardThe next time you take a look at your SIM card, you might just see things differently if Gemalto has their way. Knowing what a juggernaut Facebook has grown into with still plenty of potential and room to expand, Gemalto wants to further the cause of social networking by implementing Facebook and letting it run on a SIM chip – basically letting all GSM phones access Facebook, even if it is a featurephone that lacks the smarts.

This is because this idea toys with the concept of a SIM-based client, where it will rely on the GSM SIM Toolkit and Class 2 SMS messages, delivering the most basic Facebook features such as updates, pokes and friend requests – guess that rules out the tons of Flash-based games at the moment, but this could very well be a hit in emerging markets.

As the SIM Toolkit is part of the GSM standard, it is obviously supported in every GSM handset, ranging from the most basic of models all the way to the iPhone 4 from AT&T (rule the Verizon model out since that is CDMA). How will this affect bandwidth consumption across mobile networks? Only time will tell if the Facebook SIM takes off in a big way.

Social networks have become so popular that people frequently spend hours on them a day. Of these social networks Facebook and Twitter lead the pack with hundreds of millions of uses who return each and every day. In fact, Facebook has gotten so popular that rumors of a self branded phone have been circulating for quite some time.

twitterlogo Twitter: No Self Branded Smartphone

Unfortunately (or fortunately), these rumors have been debunked time and time again with various hardware manufacturers coming forth to show off devices only with heavy Facebook integration. However, now that Facebook rumors have been debunked, people have shifted their focus to Twitter asking, will there be a Twitter phone? Twitter CEO Dick Costolo has come forth to say that despite the fact that 40 percent of Tweets actually come from cell phones, they have no plans to work on a Twitter branded phone.

Bummer, but then again, did you really want one?

lg triptych LG Triptych conceptual phone looks totally different

There is one good thing about concepts that we just absolutely love – the ability to think up of whatever we want simply because we are no longer bounded by physical laws as well as technical limitations of current technology. Having said that, would any of you find the LG Triptych concept phone to be something worth drooling over?

It will boast two displays (instead of three that we wish it did to live up to its name), where it can be turned from a tablet to a smartphone with but a flip of the display. Thanks to the designer Edward Hale over at the Pratt Institute, the LG Triptych will see both screens synchronize with one another to become one large tablet.

Too bad the LG Triptych is not a prototype at the moment (nowhere near that, in fact), but then again we can always sit down and play the waiting game, hoping that tomorrow’s technologies will finally catch up with today’s idea. I mean, how many people laughed at the Wright brothers when they originally intended to set out and make men fly? With flexible displays making their way mainstream, we won’t be surprised to see the Triptych enter production one day.
