zynga logo Zynga Received Over $100 Million From Google
Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) has invested somewhere between $100 million and $200 million into Zynga according to a Google source with TechCrunch. Zynga has raised almost half a billion dollars in venture capital last year, including $150 million SoftBank Capital and $180 million from Digital Sky Technologies, Tiger Global, IVP, and Andreessen Horowitz.

The investment made by Google is part of a large strategic deal. Google may launch a new service called Google Games and Zynga may be their premier partner. Google made the investment, not their VC arm Google Ventures. Zynga has numerous strategic deals in place. Zynga signed a 5 year commitment to Facebook and has a games distribution with Yahoo! for Yahoo! Games.

Screen shot 2010 07 11 at 2.04.44 PM Ann Arbor Mobile Company Mobiata Plans To Hire 8 People This Year
Ann Arbor mobile company Mobiata is best known for their FlightTrack application on the Apple App Store. Mobiata founder Ben Kazez worked at Apple as an intern in Minnesota relocated to Ann Arbor in early 2009. Now he plans to move Mobiata’s first office to the second floor of Nickels Arcade in downtown Ann Arbor, which is less than one mile from Google’s AdWords office. The company also plans to hire about 8 more employees this year, giving them 10 total employees.

Mobiata’s FlightTrack application made about $1 million in 2009 sales. “Basically we’re in a business right now where we’re only limited by the number of people we have,” said Kazez in an interview with AnnArbor.com.

Jason Bornhorst now works for Mobiata. Bornhorst created an application called DoGood in the summer of 2009 and sold it to Tonic.com. Kazez said that he is in the process of recruiting people that have experience with the Google Android operating system as well.

Mobiata used to be based at the U-M TechArb Incubator and the Tech Brewery Incubator. One of the reasons why the application sales reached very high is because Steve Jobs personally said that he was impressed with Mobiata’s work at a conference on stage. We congratulate Mobiata on their success and growth as a fellow Ann Arbor based tech company.

Notes Plus 1.2

Price: $4.99, Version: 1.1 -> 1.2 (iTunes)

211477 Update: Notes Plus (Productivity)
Description:

A practical HANDWRITING note-taking tool with palm detection, magnifier glass for writing fine text with big finger, stroke smoothening for faster writing, keyboard for typed text, PDF exporting, and Google Docs uploading.

This app solves two problems which make handwriting on a touch screen practical: allowing palm down while writing and enabling writing fine text with big finger.

1. PALM DETECTION
It is not only uncomfortable but also impossible to write with your palm up on the air, especially when using a stylus. This app analyzes the structure of the human palm to differentiate between a should-be-rejected palm touch and a valid writing finger touch. The result is that only the finger produces digital ink. Please feel free to test this feature by placing your palm any place on the screen, in any position, you will see an orange message up on the top saying “Palm detected”. Yes, it works for left-handed people too.

2. BIG FINGER – SMALL TEXT
The tip of a finger is 10 times bigger than a pen tip; that makes the iPad screen about the same size as a Post-It note when writing with a finger! How practical would that be if there isn’t a zooming mechanism for writing like a fine-point pen? This app provides a Zoom-Write mode with auto-scrolling feature for effectively using a finger to write fine text.
An interesting side effect of this Zoom-Write is that the writing area is completely outside of the palm area; so there is no palm detection needed.

This app also provides a few features to make a note taking app practical:

3. TYPED TEXT
If you feel like typing instead of handwriting, you can use the keyboard to insert typed text anywhere on the page, in any font, any size, any color and any layout.

4. EXPORT TO PDF – UPLOAD TO GOOGLE DOCS
Not only that you can export notes to multi-page PDF documents and download to your computer, you can also email and upload them to your Google Docs account.

5. PAGES TOGETHER
A notebook can have as many pages as you want. You can create as many notebooks as you want. You can insert pages at the end or in the middle of a note book. You can delete a single page or an entire note book. Each page records time when it was last edited.

7. ERASE and RE-ARRANGE
Select drawing strokes, handwriting text, or typed text to erase or move them around.

6. UNDO / REDO
Multi-level undo / redo.

8. OPTIONS, OPTIONS, OPTIONS, …
Change stroke colors, thickness, opacity, stroke fill colors, keyboard text fonts, text colors, font size, paper backgrounds, …

9. INTUITIVE USER INTERFACE
As seen from the screenshots below, the interface was designed to be what you are already familiar with. A great effort was put in to hide controls so that it would not cluster the interface. You should be able to start without a tutorial. However, if you need one, there is one QuickStart guide when the app is first loaded.

If you are still here, you must be either a reviewer or someone who is very thorough. If you are a reviewer, please email me ([email protected]) to get a promotional code (if I haven’t given them all out yet). I love skeptical reviews; only by those, the app can become better.

What’s New

Fix a major defect pointed out by Studentuser (thank you): moving strokes sometimes did not saved. This was because of a miscalculation on coordinates while optimizing moving operation. It is fixed now!
