mzi.vilelqac.100x100 75 Solar WalkOur solar system is a fascinating place. While much information is unknown about our section of the universe, we tend to forget exactly how much has been discovered. Solar Walk is an app that guides you through the solar system, providing with you interesting factoids along the way. Particularly on the iPad, Solar Walk enables you to feel as though you are traipsing through the planets and around the Sun.

One of the coolest things about Solar Walk is the fact that the depiction of the solar system opens in real time, meaning that the alignments of the Sun and planets are accurate to the second. Furthermore, the time scale on the right can be moved in order to see the orbits change accordingly, or you can select a particular day, minute, and hour to view. You can see the orbits of each planet around the Sun, and utilize the touch feature to see the system from all angles.

Touch capabilities also allow you to zoom in on particular bodies. This is where the educational element comes in. Double click on an object and it magnifies. Press the “i” in the upper left corner, and you can receive interesting gems of knowledge beyond general information, such as how the object got its name, statistical facts and figures, its internal structure, and what missions have ventured to it. Press the button in the lower left corner, and you’re taken back to a complete view of the solar system.

If you are at all interested in or curious about our location in the universe, Solar Walk is for you. Aside from the fact that the graphics are just beautiful, the app is also factually relevant and accurate to the time. No other app can show you exactly how the Earth looks in orbit right now or detail Saturn’s internal structure. The only issues people have taken with the app revolve around the marked absence of Pluto… My only issue with it is that it doesn’t explore other solar systems, but maybe I am getting a bit ahead of myself. I also think it could benefit from social networking (like everything else), and adding the ability to tweet or facebook findings would give the app a social edge. Furthermore, Solar Walk’s sister app, Star Walk, provides links to Wikipedia, which could also be an interesting addition. These matters aside, Solar Walk exposes the physical awe of the solar system while making sure we understand the details as well. The graphics, interactive nature, accuracy, and knowledge combine to make an app that is truly out of this world.
