Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) CEO and co-founder Steve Jobs took the stage at the WWDC 2010 conference this morning and wowed everybody with the new iPhone 4. Over 5,200 people are attending the conference from across 57 countries. The conference sold out in 8 days. The first thing Steve Jobs talked about was the iPad. In an e-mail to Steve Jobs, a fan said “I was sitting in a cafe with my iPad, and it got a girl interested in me. Now that’s what I call a magical device!” The iPad has sold over 2 million units, meaning there is one selling every 3 seconds on average. The iPad will be available in 19 countries by July. The iPad store has 8,500 apps — which have been downloaded over 35 million times. About 95% of all apps submitted to the Apple App Store are approved within 7 days.

After Jobs talked about the iPad and App Store, Reed Hastings took the stage and announced the Netflix for iPhone application coming out this summer for free. After Hastings, Zynga CEO Mark Pincus announced the Farmville app for the iPhone with in-app purchases and push notifications. Activision SVP Karthik Bala announced Guitar Hero for the iPhone for $2.99. Apple hit the $1 billion mark paid to developers recently too.

Steve Jobs took the stage again to announce the iPhone 4, the thinnest smartphone on the planet at a 9.3mm width. Features include front facing camera, micro SIM tray, and LED flash on the back. There is a bottom mic, top mic, headset jack, and noise cancellation mic. There are also several lines around the iPhone that act as antennas. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, GSM, and UMTS is supported.

The iPhone 4 also has a Retina Display where pixel density has been increased four times. This means text will be a lot sharper. The display is 3.5 inches with 326 pixels per inch. The resolution is 960×640 pixels and IPS technology for wider viewing angles. The contrast ratio is 800:1. The iPhone is powered with an A4 chip. Other features include 7 hours of 3G talk time and 6 hours of 3G browsing. There is 10 hours of WiFi browsing, 10 hours of video, and 40 hours of music. Standby time is 300 hours.

The environmental checklist for the iPhone is:
- Arsenic free
- BFR free
- Mercury free
- PVC free
- Highly recyclable

The iPhone 4 also has a 3 axis gyroscope for multiple angle apps. Steve Jobs showed how the feature works by demoing a game that looks similar to Jenga.

The digital camera on the phone is 5 megapixels with 5x digital zoom. There is also a backside illuminated sensor and tap to focus. The camera also records HD video with 720p at 30fps. That is solid! The iPhone 4 also has video editing through iMovie for iPhone at a cost of $4.99 for the app.

iOS 4 has multitasking and folders as announced before. There is also unified inboxes with threading and audio controls for any audio app that you are using.

As far as security is concerned there is even better data protection, mobile device management, multiple Exchange accounts, Exchange Server 2010, SSL VPN support, and wireless app distribution.

The default search engine for iPhone can be switched from Google to Bing or Yahoo! too. “Microsoft has done a great job on this. Check it out, it’s kinda cool,” said Jobs. Microsoft’s search engine broke search results into tabs, just like Google did for the iPhone.

This month the 100 millionth iOS device will be sold between iPads, iPhones, and iPod Touch devices. iBooks will also be brought to the iPhone and iPod Touch where you can buy e-books and PDFs. This includes bookmarks and notes. There are about 150 million iTunes accounts that will have access to the iBooks store.

Apple iAds are becoming available for developers now too. Some of the brands working with Apple on iAds already include Nissan, Citi, AT&T, GE, Geico, Campbells, Target, Best Buy, Disney, TBS, etc. iAds have emotion/interactivity and Apple hosts the ads. Advertisers have committed about $60 million thus far.

Oh and “one more thing…”

FaceTime

FaceTime is video calling through the front facing cam. It will work over WiFi. No set up is required either. It works on front and rear camera with portrait or landscape mode. Apple showed a commercial of the video calling feature where two people are speaking in sign language. “This is one of the moments that reminds us of why we do what we do,” said Jobs. The commercial was directed by Sam Mendes.

The iPhone 4 is available in black or white. The cost is $199 for 16GB or $299 for 32GB with a 2 year contract. If your AT&T contract expires in 2010, you can upgrade 6 months early. Preorders start June 15th, device will be in stores on June 24th. Shipping starts in 5 countries (U.S., France, Germany, U.K, Japan) and in July, it will be shipped in 18 more countries.
