Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce you to the future of utilities apps. Tapbots, a series of three utilities apps with robot inspiration, showcase how increased functionality does not mean a sacrifice of unique and impecable design.
The idea for Tapbots was formulated when the two creators, Paul and Mark, left Oakley, Inc. to pursue ideas for simple weight-tracking apps, inspired by the success of the Wii Fit. Once they began their mission and discovered that their designs were reminiscent of characters from Wall-E, the idea struck them — why not have multiple apps, each based on a different robot with its own specialized task? Thus was born the family of Tapbots. There are currently three members:

Weightbot is the original Tapbot and the one that led Paul and Mark to conceive of the Tapbot family. It is possibly the coolest weight-tracking tool out there, and does so in a way that is simply about numbers — no BS motivation that you’re not going to listen to. Height can be entered into the settings so that when you input your weight, your BMI is automatically calculated. You can easily scroll through the days to track your progress. However, the appearance and simplicity are not the coolest things about Weightbot; the app also allows you to shake an entry to delete it, turn the screen to the left to see a chart of your progress (the weight you’ve gained or lost, where you are currently, where your goal is and what you need to reach it, and how much time has passed and how much time you have left to achieve your goal), and turn the screen to the right to see a graph of where you are, where your goal is, and what would be considered “overweight” for your height. Weight tracking has never been so on-point.

Convertbot is a sleek and simple conversion tool. Instead of the rudimentary lists that most other conversion apps have, Convertbot has a wheel that you spin through, deciding what you’re converting. Furthermore, when you click the units in the lower corners of the wheel, the wheel transforms to display particular units, maintaining the same look through each step of the conversion. Finally, unlike many other apps, Convertbot allows you to convert mixed units (such as feet + inches), creating the most intuitive interface out there. Simple taps reverse the order of the units presented and get you to the number pad, and nothing you do changes the deviceful design.

Finally, there is Pastebot. The premise of Pastebot is essentially this: anything you copy on your device, be it text or pictures, is automatically transferred to the Pastebot Clipboard, so that you always have it and so that you can paste it into any other application at any time. You can edit text entries and do things such as encode HTML, convert to uppercase, or translate them as well. You can also search the text on Google or send it as an e-mail. With the pictures, you can edit them as well — convert them to black and white, invert them, etc. — and you can e-mail them or save them to the device. Entries can be grouped and are saved until you delete them. Meanwhile, the graphics are flawless, and actually make you feel as though you’re using more of a game or machine than a utilities application.
The Tapbots family has quickly found a place in my heart. Not only are they the best-looking utilities apps on the block, they are also provide some of the best functionality around. Their unique designs alone are worth the investment (each app ranges between $1.99 and $2.99). They prove that utilities apps don’t have to adhere to the “boring” stereotype; they can be simultaneously fun and useful! I can’t wait to see what member they will welcome next!

The BP Oil Spill in the Gulf Coast is the worst spill to date and is bound to affect at least everyone in the USA, if not everyone worldwide. Since everyone will not always have their computers, TVs, or newspapers around them, many apps have been developed so that people can keep track of this disaster as it spreads and washes ashore.

Oil Spill 2010 has a news focus surrounding the spill. With this app, you can view the latest oil spill videos and pictures as well as keep tabs on the most up-to-date news stories. Additionally, you can learn about the natural resources in the Gulf that will be affected by the spill as well as how you can help and what you can do if you have already been adversely affected by the spill.

BP Oil Spill Tracker also links you to the latest breaking news, but also gives you some insider insight by linking you to the White House blog, BP statements and feeds, the newest press releases about the spill, and how people are responding on sites like Twitter and Facebook. Furhtermore, the app allows people to band together in this time of need through an in-app chat function as well as the ability to send pictures of any affected areas of animals and check to see what beach reports and videos have been made as the oil spill spreads.

Oil Spill in Gulf Coast is similar to the previously mentioned apps in that it also links you to the most current spill-related news. However, it also shows you a map of the oil spill as it spreads and tracks current estimates of how much oil is being spilled by the leading theorists. It also allows you to see a to-the-second estimate of how much oil has been spilled based on an estimate that you can set. Finally, this app’s edge comes from its listing of all of the animals that are endangered by the oil spill as well as information about the animal, a map of where it resides, photographs, sound noises, and a description of what could happen because of the catastrophe.

MoGO takes a more active standpoint on the oil spill by enabling iPhone users to photograph and report any animals, water, or beaches they see that are affected by the oil. The pieces of information you provide in addition to your GPS coordinates are then immediately sent to the Mobile Gulf Observatory so that they can send wildlife experts to aid any alive and/or injured animals and so that they can continue to compile information on the environmental effects of the spill.
And finally, to end this post on a lighter, more humorous note (because we can’t be down about the spill all the time)…

Duck vs BP. With a name like this, a game can’t go wrong. While the real-life situation might be a little more grim for the ducks in the Gulf region, the game of Duck vs BP puts you as an eco-warrior duck trying to steer clear of the falling oil bubbles in an attempt to block the burst pipes. As an added bonus, the game incorporates fun environment facts so that you’re learning while you play. If only ending the oil spill was this entertaining and easy…
So there you have it — some of the leading apps for the oil crisis. The only kinds of information missing in these apps are full reports on how areas are currently being affected, what you can do in your area as the oil spill infiltrates it, and more about how to donate or help. However, aside from staying informed and knowledgeable through media like these apps, sadly, all we can do is wait until it is all over. Here’s to a solution SOON!

Business and technology have always relied on each other for development and growth. It’s no surprise that developers for the iPhone are constantly finding ways to integrate the two. Apps that fit this purpose mostly come in the form of office apps. These apps allow users to read and share their text, pdf, spreadsheet, or html files. Office apps for the iPhone make it easier for professionals by enabling them to send and receive important information from any location.
Office apps are by no means new to the app store, but it’s nice to know what kind of deal you’re getting when you buy one of these apps. If you’re looking for something that covers a variety of functions, the two preeminent apps that fulfill this function are:
1. Documents To Go Premium – Office Suite

- Capabilities: Reading and editing Microsoft Word and Excel files, transferring files over wi-fi, can access Google Docs and other document accounts, creating emails with attachments
- Average Customer Rating: 3.5
- Cost: $11.99
- Customer Sentiment: Needs to have one version be compatible with both the iPhone and iPad; Users do not want to have to pay twice for something that can be transferable on the same account
- Personal Opinion: I like this application a lot. It’s organized well and it does everything I would need it to do if I was at school or in the workplace. I can access my email and download shared documents, create my own documents on the fly, or get a document from my desktop after I’ve finished it so I can take it where ever I need it. It could be a little cheaper as its competitor provides very similar functionality for two dollars less.
2. Quickoffice Connect Mobile Suite

- Capabilities: Reading and editing Microsoft Word and Excel files, transferring files over wi-fi, can access Google Docs and other document accounts, creating emails with attachments
- Average Customer Rating: 3.5
- Cost: $9.99
- Customer Sentiment: The app is glitchy (freezes up, fails to save, fails to access Google Docs), Lacks spellcheck
- Personal Opinion: This app is useful for all the same reasons as its competitor. The problem is that the user interface is a lot less intuitive in comparison. I had trouble figuring out how to read email attachments that were not my own.
There are a few other apps in the app store with more limited capabilities in comparison to these two apps. But these apps are still worth a look for their specific functionality and lower prices. Here are a couple of such apps to consider:
ReaddleDocs

- Capabilities: Can read and download documents from email account and other internet sources
- Average Customer Rating: 4
- Cost: $4.99
- Customer Sentiment: Problems with reading html offline, issues with freezing
- Personal Opinion: If I were looking for a full office app (with document editing), I would avoid this app. However, if I had my documents prepared beforehand and only wanted to access them without having to pay for document editing, this is definitely the app I would want. Because it had an internet browser, this app gave me the most freedom to search the internet for attached documents.
Office²

- Capabilities: Word processing, Spreadsheet creation, access to Google Docs and other document sharing websites
- Average Customer Rating: 3.5
- Cost: $5.99
- Customer Sentiment: Has issues completing “round trip” file transfers (receives files from internet but sometimes fails to convert files to a form suitable for email)
- Personal Opinion: This app was similar to the Quickoffice app, except it only accesses Google Docs and does not read email attachments. I find that emailing documents is the easiest way to transfer documents between devices so the lack of this capability causes me to have doubts about this app.
Although these apps lack the functionality of the first two, they still provide the essentials for creating professional documents. All of these apps allow for users to work from any location or on the move, promoting greater productivity and less effort wasted trying to crunch time between idle periods away from the computer. Having these apps with you means having all the information you need for a presentation, meeting, or conference in your pocket. It is no longer enough to consider these apps. These apps are absolutely essential to doing good business.

Before going into this, I just want to first list a couple of factors that were considered.
Functions(quality/quantity)
Price
All apps below discussed are “comprehensive” office apps, able to create, edit, format, and share(with e-mail or google doc etc) Microsoft Word docs and Excel spreadsheets.
-Quickoffice Connect Mobile Suite-
Some highlights:
*Editing and formatting is very easy with this app because of the Multi-Edit Toolbox that has a lot of different editing/formatting functions in one.
*Navigating is also simple and easy. Just scroll up, down, left, right.
*Convenient drag-drop option.
The best part of this app is that it is extremely easy to use. The app runs smoothly without any bug so far. The price, however, is $9.99, the most expensive of the office apps discussed in this blog.
Functions 5/5
Price 3/5
Overall 4/5

-Documents to Go-
Some highlights:
*Easy editing and formatting as much as Quickoffice.
*Navigating is also just as easy.
The good thing is that the basic version of the app is relatively inexpensive – $7.99. It was also preloaded onto many devices including Blackberry, Palm etc, so many users who switch to iPhone from other platforms are familiar with the functionality and some of UI features. And if you are power/enterprise user you just need to spend $4.99 more to upgrade and then you can edit PowerPoint files (does not exist in QuickOffice) and access files from online storages(ex. Google Doc). The bad part about this app is that the e-mail function is weak. Edit & send function exists for Microsoft Exchange users, but not for other e-mails. The function is also not WITHIN the program.
Function 4/5
Price 2/5(considering the devices that did not come with preloaded versions. $7.99 + $4.99)
Overall 3/5

-Documents 2-
Some Highlights
*Easy editing and formatting as much as Quickoffice.
Using this app is somewhat uncomfortable. It lacks many customization options and navigation capabilities for the users to have an easy time using it. Price, however, is very cheap and quite alluring. $1.99
Function 2/5
Price 4/5
Overall 3/5

-Office2-
This app lacks photo & wifi functions. And it is not compatible with Microsoft Office 2007, which many people use today! You also cannot open e-mail attachments within the app. On other occasions, this app is known to crash once in a while. This one comes at a standard price of $7.99.
Function 1/5
Price 3/5
Overall 2/5
