Since the release of ABC Digital’s iPad application in early May, there has been plenty of opportunity for refinements to be made in order to weave out the bugs and enhance the audience’s viewing experience.

With the ability to watch a variety of TV shows that are available on the ABC network, along with a hands-on episode guide that reveals what episodes will be on up to a week in advance, the application is more than enough to satisfy any dedicated audience. From the hilariousness of Modern Family, to the rhythmic excitement of Dancing with the Stars, for a majority of its programs the ABC iPad application has both clarity through its picture and an easy-to-use layout through its crisp interface. This is definitely a must-have application for any ABC Network enthusiast and iPad owner that enjoys watching its hit programs. All you need is internet connection and you’re set to take ABC wherever you go.

If you’re looking for a photoshop application, you’re bound to run into dozens of them in the app store.  Whether for business or pleasure, photoshoppers want a wide range of functions and capabilities from the program they use.  FX Photo Studio is an app that addresses the desires of users more than most.  This photoshop app has dozens of effects to choose from and gives the user plenty of room for combination and customization.  These effects can be selected from a group of effects under a category or from a comprehensive list of all the effects.  The app also includes a cropping mode for cutting out extraneous parts of photos.  Both features add up to an app that gives users many possibilities to play with as you can add effects on top of one another.  It also includes some entertaining perks like the random effect button, which applies a random effect from the list to your photo, and the random trivia page that appears during loading screens.  The only problem I had with this app was that it lacked a paintbrush function, but this shortcoming isn’t something worth hanging on since it’s pretty hard to draw on an iPhone when your fingers take up more screen space than the paintbrush.  I had a lot of fun photoshopping with this app and it’s definitely something to check out if you’re interested in editing your photos.

It wasn’t long before InMethod created an application that would change mobile entertainment as we know it.

In many cases, watching video on the go was made possible through applications that, more or less, served as a recreation of their respective websites, but Air Video proves to be different from the rest. With the ability to watch the downloaded videos from your Mac or PC onto your iPad, in addition to being able to convert videos both live and offline, the Air Video app allows its users to enjoy their iTunes library, whether it be TV shows, Movies, or Music Videos without the hassle of another download to their mobile device. Through local networks and internet connections, Air Video provides a virtually seamless stream of content. However, despite its innovative features, Air Video has its downsides. For one, all videos downloaded through iTunes that are DRM protected will not play through the application. Also, setting the actual internet connection proved to be quite tricky, but manageable nonetheless. After downloading the Air Video Server on the computer, a unique PIN will be provided in order for the streaming to commence. From my perspective, it was definitely worth the extra work to get the Air Video application running on the iPad. Now I’m able to enjoy my music, videos, and TV shows wherever my travels take me.

As I previously wrote, the current incarnation of the iPhone has plenty of photo editing and effects applications.  The upcoming iPhone 4G shows incredible potential with the new 5 megapixel camera with LED flash.  This means that upcoming apps are certain to take advantage of the new iPhone’s processing and visual power.  What we’ve seen so far of photo photo editing apps will now be updated and improved upon, giving users even more options and freedom to play around with their photos.  Apps like these will likely open up new means for users to express their creativity and fundamentally alter the way we share our thoughts and ideas.

But with the release of the iPhone 4G still weeks away, the best we can do is to glimpse at what the next generation of apps will look like.  Here are a few specialized photo editing apps that might give us an idea as to what future apps of the sort will look like and how they will work:

Color Splash

With the Color Splash app, users can upload their photos to the app and have the image grayed out.  Once the photo is grayed out you can use the brush tool to fill back in the color which was grayed out.  The brush has different settings for size, opacity, and edge hardness.  There is also the red view mode which allows you to see areas that you have colored in that are to bright to see in the regular display.  This app even comes with a few video tutorials to guide you through the process.

Photoshop.com Mobile

This app is similar to FX Photo Studio in that it changes photos through the use of effects.  However, this app stands out on its own because it utilizes the scrolling capabilites of the iPhone to adjust the degree to which the photo is affected by the particular effect being used.

iPicEd – Edit Photos with Comfort

Another photoshop app, this app stands out because of its combination of the list of effects and the scrolling customization ability.  It’s missing some of the effects in the other apps but brings new ones into the fold, giving it staying power over its competitors along with introducing new possibilities for upcoming apps.  Effects like those in the “deform” category bend and distort the image so that it does not appear in that rectangular form most photos usually take.

Photoshop apps like these can only hint at the kinds of apps we’ll see with the iPhone 4G.  The enhanced details of high resolution pictures and the strength of the new processing chip mean that app developers will be pressed to create new apps that allow for even greater range in user customization and photo effect detail.
