For those of us who need to set goals, whether we find it satisfying or necessary, the Streaks – Motivational Calendar app is a great tool for keeping track of progress.  From keeping track of how many days you’ve gone without smoking to how many times you’ve practiced violin this week, this app will help organize your progress towards your goal.  It counts how many days you’ve made an effort to reach your goal and tallies them as a streak.  If you miss a day, you end your streak.  By keeping tabs of your longest streaks, this calendar app motivates you to compete against yourself to see how long you can continue a streak.

The calendar is customizable, giving you the ability to create and name a clendar for each goal and to choose which days of the week you allow yourself to skip.  It also comes with four backgrounds to make your calendars stand out.  You are responsible for marking down which days you’ve attempted to reach your goal so if you lie, the only person being cheated is you (the calendar prevents you from marking future days to help you with this as well).  Overall, it’s a great app for personal organization; if you don’t want to take my word for it, it’s rated 4+ in the app store.

Can you remember the grammar lessons you had in elementary school?  High school?  Chances are you’ve forgotten most of the grammar lessons from your school days (and it’s not really your fault).  Grammar isn’t taught enough to stick; it isn’t covered as well as topics like science and math which are seen as more important to success.  However, reading and writing skills are still highly valued abilities these days because no matter what media we communicate through, these skills are necessary for proper understanding.  With the Grammar App, you can relearn the rules of grammar and refresh your writing ability.

The Grammar App comes with tutorials for essential English grammar and punctuation rules.  The tutorials are presented as slides with short explanations of rules with intermingled test examples to make sure you’re paying attention.  It also comes with sets of tests to complete once you’ve finished a tutorial.  Each test consists of short sentences that test your understanding of the material without confusing your reading senses.  This app is great for redeveloping your writing skills or helping your child learn grammar for the first time.  Either way, it’s a very helpful app and it’s worth a look.

With the release of the iPhone 4 yesterday, we can expect to see a lot of change in the app store.  It’s for sure that we’ll see entirely new apps that ill be custom fit to the functionality of the new iPhone.  But what about the apps that were already out?  What can we expect to see in terms of updates and upgrades?Chances are we’ll see a lot of them updating to be more functional in conjunction with the new tech the iPhone 4 brings to the fold (if developers want to stay competitive, that is).  I’ve already discussed predictions about video and photo editing apps, but what kinds of upgrades can we expect from such apps that already exist, as well as from other old apps?  I can’t say for sure, but here are some guesses:

Mirror Apps

I always thought of these kinds of apps as mostly useless because they don’t really act like mirrors.  Up until recently, they relied on the reflection off the the screen to give you a mirror image.  But now, with the front camera, the iPhone 4 can breathe new life into these apps.  Now, hopefully, we will be able to see a clear and accurate mirror image of ourselves thanks to mirror apps that take advantage of the front side video camera.

Compasses

The new gyroscope will bring improvements to the accuracy of these apps.  We can also expect to see better positioning from GPS apps with the new capabilities packed into the iPhone 4.

Newspaper and Website Apps

With the new retina display (4 times the pixels compared to the previous incarnation of the iPhone) reading small print or viewing large websites will become easier.  Zooming in will produce less pixelated text and will make reading easier.  The featured pictures of a site will also look much better thanks to the improved resolution.  As for changes by the developers, we’ll most likely see them increase the amount of text and images on the screen and maybe add higher resolution images.

Games

With the new gyroscope, the iPhone 4 is better than its predecessors in terms of motion detection.  This means that games utilizing the gyroscope will most likely update their motion sensing programs, making games more accurate and reactive to your hand motions.  You’ll feel more in sync with your games.

Photo and Video Apps

These apps will most likely see updates in their customization effects.  Effects will be sharper because the pictures and videos themselves will be sharper due to the new camera and high resolution display.  Phone will know not only the geo-position of the camera, but also an exact view angle at the moment when picture is taken. Other than that, though, existing apps might not see major improvements outside of being made into totally new apps.

It’s hard to say exactly what changes will occur.  App developers, I’m sure, have been thinking about changes to their existing apps since they first heard about the new iPhone 4G.  But it hasn’t been all that long so they’ll still be planning these changes for awhile.  What they come up with might fit these predictions perfectly, or they might surprise us all.  I wouldn’t put it past the third party developers to come up with new innovations to bring their old apps back to the top of the app lists.

Have you ever dreamed of being a great master of something? Thomas Edison once said, “genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration,” and recent studies show that he was perfectly correct!  Studies are showing that the best of the best only reach that point of mastery after 10,000 hours practicing their craft.  This idea has recently come into the public eye thanks to Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers which provides several examples of famous geniuses who reached their peaks only after practicing 10,000 hours.  Level Me Up HD! for the iPhone takes this quantified mark of genius and makes it into a game for your benefit.  It encourages you to reach these levels of mastery with a reward system much like one out of a role-playing video game.

Level Me Up HD! allows you to keep track of the hours you spend honing the skills you wish to become proficient at or master.  Create a profile for yourself, then enter the skill and number of hours you put into the skill.  based on the number of hours you have put in, the app will give you a level and title that reflects your progress.  You can choose whether to gain levels in a linear fashion (practice x number of hours and gain a level) or to gain them much like experience in role-playing games (the higher the level, the more experience you need to reach the next level).  It also differentiates between practicing for proficiency and practicing for mastery.  Once you’ve reached 1000 hours, you have reached proficiency in the skill you are practicing and the app acknowledges this by changing the levels to “epic” levels.  These epic levels and the titles such as “practiced” or “apprentice” are meant to motivate you to practice harder.  This app makes practice into an entertaining game while getting you to work hard to improve yourself.
