mzl.jzjiygyo.100x100 75 Loopt…No StarWith the sheer amount of LBS-inspired social networking apps floating around, there is bound to be some crossover or commonalities between them. However, the release of Loopt Star hits a little too close to the app that started it all — Foursquare. Generally speaking, with Loopt Star you go places, connect with friends, earn rewards and achievements, and aim to become the Boss of a certain location. Plus, it’s Facebook enabled. With Foursquare, you go places, connect with friends, earn rewards and badges, aim to become a place’s Mayor, and you can link it to your Facebook as well. Sound familiar?

I think it’s great that so many apps are trying to connect people with places and encourage exploration (as opposed to sitting idly by the computer, updating Twitter and whatnot), and a lot of apps have a lot of interesting and unique things to offer within this realm. But, really, Loopt Star, you couldn’t come up with an edge of your own? Sure, there may be some minor differences, but when it comes down to it, Loopt Star is really just a Foursquare follower.

The video capabilities of the iPhone 3Gs have already changed the way iPhone users memorize their experiences.  With the upcoming iPhone 4, Apple continues to improve on this revolutionary technological advancement.  It will be able to record and display videos in HD (720p) and will take advantage of its display-side camera to enable face-to-face chat between two callers, sort of like a Skype conversation.  The FaceTime function, as the iPhone’s developers call it, is something completely new to the mobile communications industry in terms of usability and user base.  These additions to the iPhone will open up new possibilities for some interesting and amazing apps.  But since it’s not out yet, we can only guess at what apps developers will come up with based on what’s out there now for the iPhone 3GS.

Most of the video recording and editing apps up until now have been focused on clip editing and adding effects (similar to photoshop apps).  Apps like ReelDirector, an app that adds clip and scene transition effects, and CinemaFX, an app that adds lighting effects to scenes, are becoming common.  Chances are that future apps will follow these examples even if it will be quite challenging to adapt their performance to the stronger video capabilities of the iPhone 4.

Another thing that can be said about the current generation of video editing apps is that they will compete with the relatively inexpensive iMovie which might have an apple style unique usability. Some of these apps might possibly become obsolete or sell at much lower price than now.   Will developers give up on video editing applications or will they come up with new and innovative apps based on what they’ve learned from the current video editing apps?  We’ll just have to wait couple of months for the answers to these questions.

mzl.wzasbdai.100x100 75 Animation CreatorIn the old days, artists used to draw each frame by hand in order to create the first cartoons.  We’ve come a long way in animation since then, but if you’re feeling nostolgic, there’s an app that allows you to go back to the basics.  Animation Creator is an app for the iPhone that allows you to draw your own animated shorts.

It gives you a selection of drawing tools like the brush, the rectangle, and the positioner to create your frame.  Once you’ve finished the first frame you can create another frame by pressing the plus button, or you can delete your frame if you don’t like it by pressing the minus button.  You can also copy the frame with the copy button in between them.  Once you’re done drawing your frames, you can hit play to watch your creation in action.  You can even control the speed at which the app plays your frames (anywhere between half a frame to 24 frames per second).

Although this app lacks a selection of backgrounds and comes with a limited amount of drawing effects, it is still a very nicely done flipbook app.  At $.99, this app is a good deal for cartoonists looking for a new medium or for the average user looking for a fun and interesting app.
