SkyGrid seeks to separate itself from the pack by compiling news into relevant topics. For example, the “What’s Hot” section lists trending news and articles from multiple sources. Tapping on a topic then generates a list of articles from multiple sites and publications.

If you want a more traditional news browsing experience, you can still look through articles by categories, such as politics or entertainment. SkyGrid is a universal app and adapts itself for each iOS device so users get the best experience possible whether they’re using iPhone or iPad. On the iPad, it makes good use of the side panel in landscape mode while allowing for full-screen browsing when in portrait mode. (…)

lite brite iphone 300x200 Lite Brite Leaps from Table Top to iPhoneThe Lite Brite app for iPhone and iPod Touch is the 1970s creative electronic children’s toy reinvented with modern technology. To preserve nostalgia, the premise remains the same – create pictures with different colored pegs that light up against a black background. A nice rendition of the classic artistic toy, the Lite Brite app by Electronic Arts (EA) has some modern features as well.

Lite Brite has three ways for kids (or grownups) to play and create. (…)

There have been a few apps that I’ve picked up that claim to be able to judge the distance from one object to the next, all of which have produced questionable results. The one that I liked the best was Sonar Ruler, but it wasn’t very practical to use, and became more of a cool “look what my iPhone can do” app than anything.

IMG 0170 200x300 DAH Measure – Your Invisible RulerDAH-Measure takes the measuring app one step further by measuring distance, angle, and height, all in the same app. The developers don’t divulge how they calculate the distance, they just say that Measurements are taken using iPhone’s camera, sensors and mathematical equations.” Their goal was to make a more practical app that wouldn’t have a bunch of bells and whistles bogging it down. It was built to work, and it does fairly well.

After fidgeting with the settings, I got to where the measurement tool worked fairly well, only coming 2 ft. off the actual distance (which was 18 ft.). Height was a bit trickier, with one example coming within a foot or two of the actual target and one not coming very close at all.

One word of warning, in the settings screen you have to determine how high your camera is off the ground. Because I am an American, I switched the setting to imperial, as I like ft. better than meters. Anyways, if you use an accurate distance for “camera height from the ground” (i.e. 35-50 in.), the resulting measurements will come up pretty short. I got a more accurate distance saying that my camera was something closer to 150 in (over 12 ft.!) off the ground, obviously a crazy number. I don’t know if this is a glitch or just happened to work in my circumstance, I’m just throwing it out there.

The developers did put out a disclaimer saying that the measurements are more approximate than anything, but once you get the settings right, the results are pretty nifty.

Logo Take Part in Dreadnought Design’s iPhone Game Research PollAsk any advertiser what the most important things about ad development are and they’re sure to say “target audience” as one of the points. With over a quarter of a billion downloads to date, the App Store caters for a great spectrum of demand from business to entertainment, finance to games, social networking to utilities. Fine-tuning this broad spectrum is no easy task for application developers, where price levels and targeted advertising can be just as important as the application itself. Inevitably, there are great applications out there that just have the wrong price or the wrong advertising. The result? A wrongful position in the App Store.

Earlier this week Dreadnought Design, the iPhone games company led by John Thornewill, launched the first “in a series of research initiatives designed to better understand the characteristics of the fledging iPhone games app market.” Available only through their official Facebook page, this is a one-question only poll to see how much iPhone (or iPod Touch, we assume) owners spend on new games each month.

Votes like this don’t just help the developers, but end users too. If developers become more aware of how much users are willing to spend, then prices can be adjusted accordingly to allow customers to reap the benefits of their application. We encourage you to vote.

“The iPhone games market is very dynamic. Demand for game apps has exploded over the past 18 months or so, and very little is known about the people who buy the games and play them, and what motivates them to like or dislike a game,” says John Thornewill, CEO and lead designer at Dreadnought Design. “The more we can know about iPhone gamers – who they are and what they like – the better we, as iPhone game developers, can serve them.”

The poll remains open until October 31, where the data will be published on Dreadnought Design’s website for free.
