assault commando 300x199 Assault Commando: If It Isn’t You, Destroy It!Overall, I really like Assault Commando, but I do have one nit to pick.

3D Magic says Assault Commando is set in a South American jungle, but its look seems Asian; Perhaps we’re in Peru during the rule of Alberto Fujimori. Even at that, I’m seeing palm trees and huts here, not Japanese pagodas. The graphics actually suggest the jungle of some unnamed southeast Asian land; Hint: it rhymes with “bam.” The nice thing is, it doesn’t matter.

Whether you’re in Asia or an inexplicably Asiatic South America, Assault Commando is an old-school top-down two-stick run n gun with the feel of an arcade game. The reason the setting doesn’t matter is that the story is irrelevant. Here’s the actual plot: there’s this guy that’s you. Then there’s everything else. You destroy it. Oddly enough, in slogging through said Asian terrain in South America, you are attempting to stop one Albrecht Braun from taking over the world. Don’t ask.

Of course, destroying everything that’s not you keeps getting more difficult, as you would expect. (…)

You know you have a problem on your hands when you are playing a puzzle game that gives you four hints per puzzle and you still have problems winning. Maybe that sentence should’ve started with, “you know your a redneck when…”

IMG 0190 300x200 Zentomino ReviewZentomino is described by the developer as a game of pentominoes. Since most of the world has no idea what a pentomino is (including my spell checker), it is a game that gives you one big shape, and you have to exactly fill it with a bunch of odd shaped blocks (each block is made up of five squares, hence the “pent”). While the individual shapes never change per se, it is up to you to rotate and flip them to get them to fit in the puzzle. Pieces can only be used once, and not every piece is used in every puzzle, so you must pick wisely.

If/when you get stuck, you can ask the game for help up to four times. Some of the levels, as explained earlier, are pretty rough even after hint #4, but I suppose that the dev might as well turn the game into a YouTube video if they are just going to give you a fifth clue.

With 240 levels to begrudgingly march through, you’ll have plenty of Zentomino to play from now until the end of time. If you get too upset about not being able to solve a puzzle, just ease your ears into the soothing zen sounds that the game throws at you in your moments of fury. In all fairness, Zentomino really is a great game that will certainly test even the most senior of puzzle masters. If you are a fan of the genre, you won’t be disappointed with Zentomino. You may be upset by your lack of pentomino prowess, but don’t blame it on the game.

mzl.wfuscltg.320x480 75 300x200 Ruler 2 Brings Elegant Measurements…and a Chance at Free Swag!Ruler 2 is a new app from the same folks who brought us the popular book app, Classics. Like Classics, Ruler 2 pays equal attention to form and function; beneath the glossy interface is an easy-to-use ruler, complete with a slider for measurement instead of forcing you to guestimate. The app supports both inches and centimeters, includes a trick for measuring longer objects, and allows you to copy and paste your measurements into apps like Calculator or Mail.

It’s a big step up from the original Ruler: just ask the developers. “Ruler 1.0 was, to put it bluntly, awful, so we burned it to a fine ash and began again,” said co-creator Andrew Kaz. Their hard work seems to have paid off. Ruler 2 is clearly well-thought out, proving that traditional mediums aren’t necessarily the best implementations. In some ways, the iPhone/iPad app is more useful—and certainly more convenient—than a wooden ruler. (I really like that automatic slider. No more guestimation!)

To celebrate Ruler 2’s launch, developers Andrew Kaz and Phill Ryu are hosting a contest. Happily, you don’t even have to buy the app, and entering is easy. Prizes include fresh new Apple swag—a 64GB iPod Touch, a 16GB iPod Nano, the new iPod Shuffle, and the new Apple TV. By spreading the word about Ruler 2 via Facebook or Twitter, or by signing up for the email list, you get one entry in the drawing. (For more information, or to enter, go to http://rulerapp.com/.)

Ruler 2 is a great new implementation of a ruler app for both iPhone and iPad, and the contest is just an added bonus – you don’t have to buy Ruler 2 to enter! Check Ruler 2 out on the App Store; the universal version is a mere $0.99.

Open Times 201x300 checkMeet Fills Your Busy DayRemember the good ol’ 90’s, where TV shows would often have lines like, “well, let me see if I can fit that into my schedule” while the character fiddled with his or her schedule book? I do, and that’s exactly why I would be so excited to use checkMeet, you know, if I were a busy guy.

Instead, my day goes a lot like this. Wake up, breakfast, shower, write, write, maybe write a bit more, hang out, dinner, hang out some more, then sleep. For the busy businessman (or woman!), though, finding gaps in the daily schedule is as critical as correctly tying your shoes.

What checkMeet does is scan your iPhone’s calendar app for breaks in the schedule. Just a forewarning, the app is assuming that you have an updated calendar in you calendar app, otherwise it won’t work too well, for obvious reasons. It also won’t access a network or work with other wonky calendar apps, just the one that is built in.

From the app, you get all sorts of options to help the app determine what you would call a gap. You can choose how long a gap must be to fill it (i.e. hour long, half hour long), if you’d like to start your gaps at specific times (i.e. “on the :15’s”), and how much time between events you need for down time. Once you finish your preferences and choose a gap to fill, the scheduling goes directly into your built in calendar so you don’t have to worry about any strange export options.

For a busy guy that uses the calendar app in the iPhone, checkMeet is absolutely the best way to ensure no double bookings. If time really is money, then checkMeet is priceless.
