dots for tots 200x300 Dots For Tots – On The Go Connect The Dots FunThe other day I was having lunch with friends who also happened to be parents of small children. While waiting for what seemed like an extraodinarily long time, I found myself whipping out my iPhone in an attempt to entertain the four-year-old munchkin beside me. Google Earth, Facebook, and Sporcle wasn’t exactly going  to do the trick, but since my own kids are far beyond preschool games, my library was a bit understocked at the time. It is times such as this that apps like Dots for Tots come in very handy indeed.

From the makers of Color Me!!, which incidentally I enjoyed and tested out on the same four-year-old munchkin, Dots for Tots is a collection of simple dot-to-dot pages that include numbers, letters, shapes, and animals. Using the numbers 1 – 10 and the touchscreen interface of the iPhone, little fingers can trace and connect the dots to form the image. Granted, they have to be able to recognize numbers and know numerical order, but if they’ve mastered that skill, then you’re golden.(…)

We’ve reported on a lot of iPad magazines, like Wired, and the new exclusive iPad mag Maverick. This is the first time I have seen anything like Flipboard.

Flipboard is essentially an auto-generated contents page that is take from your Facebook and Twitter accounts. It is filled with pages and pages of stuff like web articles and videos of what your friends are into.

Best of all, the app is absolutely free.

MOG 198x300 MOG Mobile Music App May Be Spotify For The Rest Of UsThose wishing that the currently Europe-only Spotify music streaming service and iPhone app would hit to the rest of the world now have another option – MOG Mobile Music.

The MOG network has been around for a while but its new iPhone app makes it a serious contender in the audio subscription market offering similar, if not better, features by comparison to its rivals.

Highlights of the service include a library of eight million songs and some 700,000 albums that can be streamed to your iPhone over 3G and Wi-Fi and bundled into playlists. An unlimited number of songs can also be downloaded to the iPhone and stored for periods when you’re outside of Wi-Fi or cell areas.

The above features are all par for the course when it comes to this type of app and service but there are a few gems to be found in MOG Mobile Music too. The first is the true on-demand nature of the listening. Songs can be played at any time and repeated unlike many similar services that prevent repeat play, and you can listen to user playlists and customizable artist radio stations on the go. Artist radio isn’t as strict as the others either, with a simple slider determining how much of the artist you hear and how many similar artists are played.

It’s flexibility that seems to be the key difference between MOG and its rivals and, for a $9.99 per month fee, looks set to take a lead in the cloud-based music subscription game.

If you fancy trying out MOG Mobile Music, a three-day free trial is currently available when you download the app. No credit card is required either so you can sample the service risk free during this period.

So I was at Ikea the other day helping a friend pack his new couch into his car. Unfortunately, there are very few cars on this Earth that can fit a 7 ft Ikea box in them, although his Subaru Impreza Hatchback did quite nice, but there was still about a foot hanging out of the car.

IMG 6129 200x300 Animated Knots By Grog ReviewInstead of opting to pay the $50 Ikea shipping fee, we decided to tie the door shut with twine. We wrapped the door shut just fine, but when we got to the knot part, we stared at each other in fear. Ikea’s policy is to never facilitate knot tying for fear of their knots not working, so it was up to us. I ended up tying some bizarre knot, which held up just fine, but we were all very scared of losing the couch on the freeway.

Looking back, having an app like Animated Knots by Grof (AK Grog) would have been a lifesaver. Instead of some lame-o knot that I invented on the fly, I could’ve used one of the seemingly infinite number of knots that the app can show you.

AK Grog is organized by event (Fishing, Scouting, Boating… sorry, no Ikea packing) to provide easy reference to knot types. There is also a knot list that shows all of the knots together, but the list is quite daunting for a knot novice like me. Once you get into a specific knot, the app shows an animated, step-by-step program that will guide you through the process. With an extra tap you can even see what the knot is for, quickly turning you into a pro on the uses for the “Klemheist” or the “Prusik Knot”.

If you are ever in a bind and need to know how to make a specific knot, be sure to pick up AK Grog, as it is the best resource on knots that I’ve ever known. Just don’t hurt yourself with a loaded rope or a fishing line… the warning in the app says to wear protection at all times.
