The folks out at Geeks.com, providers of prime computer parts and portable GPS systems, sent me a Maxx Digital Explorer II PN3500 GPS system to review, and in a lot of ways, I’m pleased with how it turned out. Though there were some problems that bear mentioning, and I’m going to run them all down.
The Maxx Digital Explorer II PN3500 GPS system offers a 3.5 touchscreen control system, music player, video player, photo viewer, ebook reader, speaker, an SD card slot with one gig SD card containing a variety of United States Maps, sixty four megs of SDRAM and thirty two megs of flash memory. It also automatically recalculates your route if you go off course.
I really liked the way this thing caught its GPS signal. It was EXTREMELY fast, faster than even my favorite TomTom. And there are a whole lot of options here–stores music, shows video, shows photos–get the proper-sized SD card in there and you can carry around the equivalent of about eight DVDs.
But I did have some problems here. I couldn’t get it to charge on anything but a cigarette lighter–even though it came with a USB cable, it wouldn’t charge when plugged in. It came with its default language set in Spanish–if I didn’t know what “idioma” meant I’d STILL be listening to this thing describe directions in Spanish. The included suction cup is a joke. And the included maps on the card are horribly out of date. Things that I knew had been closed for years were present on the map, while things that had been open for years didn’t exist. How do you update this map? Don’t know. Thankfully, it’ll find most any street address as long as the road you’re looking for has existed recently, but still, it’s a bit inconvenient.
Despite these problems, though, the Maxx Digital Explorer II PN3500 has a lot to like about it, and considering Geeks.com only wants forty five bucks for one of these, it’s worth your while to consider.
The Good
Incredibly rapid GPS signal acquisition
Lots of options
Low price
The Bad
Operating language came pre-set in Spanish
Limited recharge options
Badly out of date maps
