JailbreakMe was released yesterday and as we said, it is one of the easiest and quickest jailbreaks. However, it is also one of those jailbreaks that really puts your iPhone at risk.
The way JailbreakMe works is that it takes advantage of a vulnerability in iOS, and more specifically the fact that iOS downloads PDF documents automatically. Comex managed to inject the jailbreak code in a PDF document that is downloaded and executed once you “slide to jailbreak” on JailbreakMe.com.
Now that this very simple exploit has been revealed, there are chances some bad guys out there might want to take advantage of it and potentially steal data from your iPhone. Before you start panicking and running around the house screaming, let’s be clear that the chances of this happening are actually very thin, but you never know…
MacStories published a fix for that earlier today:
Tweeted by @cdevwill earlier today, all you have to do is download this .deb file and open it on your device using either Terminal from your Mac, or iFile on the iPhone. Just download it and place it in /var/mobile.
- Using Terminal:
ssh root@your IP address
alpine
dpkg -i file.deb
Where “alpine” is the default password you’ll get after installing Open SSH from Cydia and “your IP address” is located under Settings – > Wifi – > active wifi connection.
- Using iFile:
Navigate to /var/mobile and double tap on the .deb file to install it.
This won’t actually patch the exploit but it will now ask you for permission every time a PDF document wants to be downloaded to your iPhone. If you know what you’re downloading then fine. However if a site tries to use Comex’s exploit and downloads some malicious software onto your iPhone, you will be able to deny it access.
I believe this fix will be available in Cydia soon but if you can’t wait, and know your way around Terminal, then give this a shot. Apple will also issue a patch for this, most likely in the net iOS update.
If you use this method to secure your iPhone, please don’t forget to share your thoughts in the comments.

As of now, there isn’t an app that lets you stream Hulu or Netflix directly. There is a Netflix app available, but it’s only for the iPad, leaving iPhone owners movie-less for the time being. There’s a Hulu Plus app but that requires a $10/month fee.
To remedy this, PlayOn is releasing a web app that lets people use its popular streaming service on the iPhone. “Users simply need to install the latest version of the PlayOn client on their Windows PC, then log into http://m.playon.tv on their iPhone while connected to their home network. The mobile app then searches the user’s local network for PlayOn servers, and upon discovery, it grants full access to Hulu, Netflix, Comedy Central, Revision3, and other PlayOn content channels. Eventually, users will be able to log onto their PlayOn servers from anywhere by using their WAN (wide area network) IP address.”
There is a cost involved ($39.99 for the first year, $19.99 each year after, or a lump $79.99 for lifetime use), but if you are itching for mobile movies, PlayOn may be your best bet.

With print on the way out and digital here to stay, it’s becoming more and more important for print newspapers to go digital (and find a way to make money doing so). The New York Times is trying to stay ahead of the digital curve, already coming out with its NYTimes app, by licensing the “DNA” of its app, as well as app maintenance, to other papers.
According to their press release, their “Press Engine” will support, “partial offline reading and the ability to save articles; share functionality; photo gallery, audio and video; horizontal and vertical reading; simple search; and device-standard advertising units.”
A few papers have already signed up for the template, including the Dallas Morning News, who is said to have hopes to have an iPad app, using the Press Engine, up by the beginning of next year. How the Dallas Morning News, or any other buyer will make money on the venture stands to be seen, but I would expect to see a bunch of Times Reader clones in the App Store in the near future.
“This is part of the multi-faceted move into new technology” at Times Co., said Ed Atorino, an analyst at Benchmark Co. in New York. “They’ve got the content, they’ve got the brainpower. We’ll see if people will pay for this stuff.”

Two weeks ago we mentioned the release of Graffiti which is an application for Android devices, and just today there is an updated which marks version 2.0.1 of the application.
The new version of Graffiti includes good features like auto-capitalization when starting a sentence, error connection, being able to learn words, and toggling between Japanese and English characters. Last but not least there is also a link to the YouTube tutorial videos of Graffiti.
