lg dlite 280x280 LG dLite Cell Phone Review–Decent Phone With Horrible ColorsWhen I first saw the LG dLite, with its bright pink color scheme and its unusual shape, I thought this was some kind of bad joke.  But naturally, I can’t just look at a phone and declare it not worth anyone’s time–I’ve got to see what that phone has to offer.  And the LG dLite definitely had more than a little to offer.

The LG dLite is a flip phone that offers GPS, speakerphone, microSD card slot, mobile web, mobile email, text messaging, picture messaging, a thousand-entry phone book, a music player, a variety of map applications, the Social Buzz application that links all your social networking sites together, a YouTube app, a two megapixel camera, a variety of games, access to the T-Mobile App Store and a battery capable of yielding six and a half hours of talk time.

See what I mean?  It’s got video, web, and camera capability along with its phone capability. It’s even got a surprisingly nifty clock built into its top cover, as you can see in the pic.  It may LOOK like a bad joke, but it’s got a lot of surprises packed under its downright cotton candy skin.  Sure, it’s not exactly the phone you want to be seen with at, say, work, but it might well be a decent phone for your off-hours.  Or even great for the kids.

But for regular folks, the LG dLite may not be what you want to have on hand, despite the fact that it’s got plenty to offer.  You may be able to get a different color scheme going, but that’s not always possible.  Your mileage may vary, of course, but I don’t want to be seen with the pink phone.

The Good

Decent array of features

Good quality controls

The Bad

Horrible color scheme

Score 7 / 10

10x0804ib13513andro NPD: Android is now top selling OS in American smartphones

Step aside, BlackBerrys and iPhones, the American consumer has voted with his wallet and picked Android as his favorite flavor in the quarter just gone. NPD’s number crunchers have just announced their findings for Q2 2010, concluding that 33 percent of phones sold during the period had Android on board. This marks the first time in eons (Q4 2007, to be more precise) that RIM has not held the crown of most purchased smartphone OS on US soil, with its BlackBerrys accounting for 28% of the market and Apple’s iPhone occupying third spot with 22%. Motorola and HTC are the key suspects fingered for Android’s continuing ascent, with the “large screen allure” of their handsets playing well with the buying public. Skip after the break for a more detailed breakdown.

An Apple spokeperson told CNET they are well aware of the security exploit found in iOS and they are apparently already working on it:

We’re aware of this reported issue, we have already developed a fix and it will be available to customers in an upcoming software update.

Fix Apple Has Already Developed A Fix for the PDF ExploitThis security glitch found in the way iOS handles PDF documents allowed the Dev Team to create JailbreakMe, which uses this exploit to inject the jailbreak code in your iPhone. Some security experts were quick to realize that this exploit could be used to inject malicious softwares in your iDevices and brought up this issue to the general public. The jailbreak community quickly developed a fix for it which can be downloaded directly from Cydia.

This morning I highlighted the irony of the situation. Apple has always claimed jailbreaking can put your iPhone at risk but it proved to be the other way around as so far, your iPhone is more secured once it is jailbroken and the exploit has been patched.

We don’t know when Apple will release this software update, which will most likely come with 4.1. Apple usually isn’t quick to fix things up so if I had a guess I’d say we won’t see this update until the end of the month.

MiTube MiTube: A Jailbreak App in the App StoreMiTube is a new app in the App Store that allows you to stream and most importantly download videos from YouTube to your iPhone. Some of you will probably remember a similar app in Cydia that was called MxTube, which was actually developed by the same guy, Max Weisel.

Something tells me MiTube won’t stay in the App Store for too long, so get on it while you. Oh, and it’s free. No more excuse for not downloading MiTube.

iphone pdf code 1 Apple: PDF security hole fix is already ready to go

JailbreakMe brought root to the iPhone 4-wielding masses, but also unearthed a nasty exploit in a PDF font. Thankfully for the rooted and those who never intended to root, Cupertino claims it has already patched the hole. “We’re aware of the reported issue, we have already developed a fix and it will be available to customers in an upcoming software update,” an Apple spokeswoman told CNET. We’re not sure exactly when it will arrive, but we’d lay odds on soon — in the meantime, don’t open any PDFs you don’t trust, don’t do anything illegal or immoral, and hit up Comex’s hack ASAP if your heart’s still set on that shiny new unlock.
