Knight Defense is a lot deeper than the quirky graphics and app icon would ever suggest. It’s mean to assume things and judge a book by its cover but when I saw that icon after installing it, I thought ‘Uh oh’. How wrong I was.

mzl.ikbdyisx.320x480 75 200x300 Knight Defense ReviewKnight Defense is a cross between Chess and Tower Defense. It’s a concept that sounds quite outlandish but it makes for a compelling and deep title. The aim is like many other tower defense games, you have to defend the King from attack. You do this by using other chess pieces to defend him. The same restrictions as in chess are in place here. Pawns can only move in a straight line although at least they can go backwards, Knights can only move in their L shaped manner and Bishops move diagonally. They each have their own attack patterns to keep an eye on so that they gradually eradicate the enemy pieces coming their way. At the start of each level, you can place your pieces however you want to start with so there’s a real level of strategy to working out how to proceed with each stage.

Each piece has their own special move of sorts too. Pawns can freeze enemies close to them while Bishops heal nearby friendly pieces. Knights boost the attack power of others and the Queen is a lethal piece of work indeed with a massive shockwave ability. The enemies offer similar special moves though so it’s far from a one sided battle. Indeed, Knight Defense is a challenging title often testing your skills and quick thinking. As the game progresses, things get harder with even a slightly bizarre cat attacking your pieces.

Ultimately though, it’s great fun. There’s a ranking up system to make each piece stronger the more points you have, just as you’d expect from a Tower Defense title and the array of difficulties and levels ensures that there’s plenty to do. Game Center and Open Feint support offering leaderboards and achievements is just the icing on the cake. For only a dollar, if you fancy a challenging tower defense game this is ideal.

twonkymobile 200x300 Twonky Mobile Helps to Stream Media to and From Your iOS DeviceThe problem with our vast amounts of media nowadays is that it’s often in so many places – stored on our computer, on our phones, on our game consoles – and sometimes those files wind up on just one place instead of where we really want them. Twonky Media is here to help alleviate some of that content dislocation, by presenting a solution for streaming media to and from your iPhone and iPod touch.

Twonky Mobile serves two purposes: first, it lets you access media being played remotely, so you can access media being played by remote UPnP servers and other Twonky Mobile servers on your iOS device. This means that you can listen to music shared from a computer, or if you have an Android phone and an iPod touch and want to listen to music from your Android on your iPod, you can do so easily. Second, it works as a media server – this means you can easily share your photos from your device to an Xbox 360 hooked up to your TV, for example. You can also use this as a middleman to beam content from servers to a device like the Roku using your iPhone or iPod touch.

One of the drawbacks, due in part to iOS restrictions, is that your music and video libraries appear to be unavailable for streaming, so you can’t use this app to play your iPod library on your Xbox 360. This is an unfortuante limitation of iOS, to prevent music and video content to be used outside of any Apple-sanctioned use. This limits some of Twonky Mobile’s use on iOS, especially as Android’s Twonky Mobile has no limits on what content can be streamed, and it even works for transmitting to AirPlay receivers. The app also doesn’t support multitasking yet, so you can’t use this to listen to audio from a remote server in the background. So while the app could definitely make use of some loosened restrictions and expanded features, but if you’re big on streaming content across your house, this could be worth checking out.
