Intel’s Atom CPUs have been the main component of the netbook craze: cheap, lower power chips for cheap, weak netbooks. Now AMD wants a piece of that cake, and has announced the Zacate CPU, part of their Fusion APU, meaning it’s a CPU with a GPU on the same chip.
AMD’s new chips will launch later this year and will reportedly offer around the same performance as Intel’s Atom, while the graphics are set to be vastly superior — enough for full 1080p HD playback of movies and Blu-ray. On top of that, the GPU will support DirectX 11 for those looking to play some games on their netbooks.
