LG Octane Cell Phone Review–Not A First Place FinisherOne of the newer phones to hit the shelves out at Verizon Wireless is the LG Octane, and while it’s definitely got the potency to be called Octane, it doesn’t quite have the fuel to make it all the way across the finish line.

The LG Octane offers up Bluetooth connectivity, speakerphone, GPS, a USB port and a microSD card slot. It also features mobile web, mobile email (you’ll have to pay for it, though) , a voice command system, support for text, multimedia, picture and voice messages as well as a variety of instant messenger systems, a variety of downloadable features like ring tones and applications, VCAST systems, a 3.2 megapixel camera, a QWERTY keyboard, a pair of displays, music player, a phone book with space for a thousand entries, alarm clock, world clock, notepad, VZ Navigator, and a battery that yields six hours and twenty minutes of talk time on a single charge.

There’s a lot of positive aspects here–plenty of great features, a solid design (though some, especially those with smaller hands, will call it bulky) and a nice battery life will come together to make a worthwhile package.  However, there’s plenty of problems here–a phone with a music player needs to have a 3.5 mm headset jack, and the LG Octane does not have one. Don’t even get me started on the “pay for mobile email” concept because that’s just patently revolting.

It’s a bit of a balance issue: most good issues here will be weighed against bad, and a lot of the bad will be subjective. So I can’t necessarily recommend the phone itself, I can however recommend you take a look at it. You may not be able to get along with this one very well, but you just might…and that makes the LG Octane worth a second look.

The Good

Plenty of features

Good battery life

The Bad

No 3.5 mm headset jack

Bulky design

Balky controls

Mobile email isn’t free

Score 6 / 10

galaxytabproduction Samsung Galaxy Tab Android Tablet Gets Production Cut in Half?

It seems like every article we tell you about how popular tablets are followed by how popular the Samsung Galaxy Tab is. While it certainly seems as if the Galaxy Tab will post high sales numbers, it seems that some analysts disagree.

If you remember, Samsung told us not too long ago that they had expected to sell a boat load of Galaxy Tab tablets by the end of the year. Hopefully (for the company, anyways), these high sales numbers would have given Samsung the fuel they needed to compete with Apple’s highly successful iOS powered iPad tablet.

Well, according to recent reports it seems that Samsung has been forced to cut Galaxy Tab production in half. While this isn’t confirmed, an analyst by the name of Ashok Kumar from Rodman & Renshaw goes on to explain that he believes consumers will be flocking towards laptops and smartphones as opposed to tablet as the uses of these two devices are much more defined than the latter.

Before you get upset, make note that this is purely rumor and until Samsung comes forth to speak officially of the matter, we’re going to take this one with a grain of salt.

angrybirds Angry Birds for Android Getting Final Release In a Few Weeks

Thanks to the addition of mobile application stores like Apple’s App Store and Google’s Android Marketplace, consumers have access to a whole slew of innovative games for the respective platforms. In fact, it’s these app stores that give Android and iOS the fuel they need to succeed in the mobile gaming industry.

One of the more popular games featured on the App Store for the iPad, iPod touch and iPhone is Angry Birds. To date, over 6.5 million copies of the game have been sold which is quite a chunk of change in the pockets of Rovio, the game’s developer.

However, while Angry Birds has been available on iOS for quite some time, Rovio has brought it to both the Nokia N900 and Google’s Android with the latter version currently in beta. Luckily, Android users won’t have to wait too much longer for the final release of Angry Birds as it was announced today that said release will be out in a few weeks.

blackberryappworldlogo BlackBerry App World 2.0 Leaves Beta, Now Available For All

Just yesterday we told you that the BlackBerry App World version 2.0 available in beta. At the time, it was only available to developers and other important folk. However, just recently, Research in Motion has announced that App World 2.0 has left beta and is now available for all to download.

Just as we told you, this new version of App World allows developers to apps priced at $0.99 and $1.99 instead of being forced to the $2.99 minimum RIM previously imposed upon the app store. Additionally, RIM is also touting the new BlackBerry ID feature which allows consumers to make credit card purchases and easily transfer already purchased applications from one device to another.

Let’s hope that this new push towards a more capable app store will give Research in Motion the fuel they need to excel in the mobile industry. If they are able to secure some hard hitting mobile application titles, the line between BlackBerry OS 6 and iOS/Android will be blurred further.
