Ah, the “rugged” cell phone. What better expression of man’s eternal desire to dominate his surroundings than to take a thoroughly unnatural creation deep into the wilds of nature? Though I don’t discount the sheer necessity of cell phone ownership or use, especially these days (it’s worth it to have at least some kind of cell phone on hand wherever you go), the Casio G’zOne Ravine is a force that’s pretty potent in the wild, if just a bit lacking in the utility department.
The Casio G’zOne Ravine is a folder style cell phone that offers speakerphone, voice recorder, world clock, E911 capability, speech to text capability, a flashlight, a thermomenter, a push to talk mode, mobile web, mobile email, VCAST service, a variety of messaging capabilities (text, multimedia, picture and voice are all available), a variety of downloadable items (including ring tones and games), and a 3.2 megapixel camera with LED light, white balance effects, a self-timer and a variety of special effects. You’ll also get VZ Navigator with GPS, tidal graph application (for the fisherman who wants to know when the best fishing hits), an astronomical calendar that shows the lunar cycle, alarm clock, calendar, stopwatch, MP3 player, 2.5mm headphone jack, and a battery capable of yielding five hours of talk time on a single charge.
There are a lot of great reasons for outdoor enthusiasts to have a Casio G’zOne. Between the military-grade durability against dust, shock and water (some pictures show it fully immersed in water) and the variety of outdoor-specific applications, it’s a tool easily on par with a Swiss army knife. Sure, it’s no match for an upper-rank smartphone in terms of utility, but one thing is clear–this has plenty going for it.
If you’re not planning to take this out for anything harsher than a pizza run, then you can probably do a lot better than the Casio G’zOne Ravine. But if you’ve got plans that take you into the deep woods for extended periods of time, then you’ll probably like this cell phone.
The Good
Incredible durability
Terrific features for outdoors enthusiast
The Bad
Mediocre battery life
Decided lack of non-outdoorsy features
Score 7 / 10

Today we’re taking a look at another Samsung, the Samsung Craft, and it’s actually got a lot backing it up. I was actually pretty surprised by the sheer amount of stuff they’ve got loaded into this phone, and I think you will be too.
The Samsung Craft is a candy bar style smartphone that offers conference calling, a 3.2 megapixel camera, 4G connectivity, an uploaded file of the Star Trek movie (yes, the Samsung Craft actually comes with the new Star Trek movie, which is a little odd but still pretty interesting), a phone book with sufficient space for two thousand contacts, calendar, note pad, alarm clock and world clock, calculator, Bluetooth connectivity, Wi-Fi connectivity, GPS, free access to MetroNavigator, access to all three of the major instant messenger suites (AOL IM, Windows Live, and Yahoo Messenger), Facebook, MySpace and Twitter access, mobile web, mobile email, a YouTube shortcut, several MetroPCS specific applications, and a battery that yields six hours of talk time on a single charge.
While the phone itself is easy to use–a QWERTY keyboard certainly helps–and there are plenty of quality features, the battery life is just a bit above mediocre (the average I’ve run into is five hours, and this is just barely over that at six) and the camera’s images don’t seem very sharp. Clear enough, but kind of dull–at least, that’s what I took away from it.
Still though, there’s plenty to offer here, with lots of useful features and worthwhile applications. It will be no one’s idea of a great phone but it will absolutely bring plenty of quality capability with it.
The Samsung Craft will bring along a solid experience that will get many different jobs done, though not with any real elan.
The Good
Plenty of solid features
A good control experience
The Bad
Mediocre battery life
Lower end camera performance

Here is Steve Ballmer bragging about Windows Phone 7, but I’d like to highlight some things that aren’t really bragging points, especially when compared to iOS and Android.
This is seven that my Source had to say:
1) No Flash. That sounds familiar, doesn’t it? This could be a temporary situation.
2) No multitasking. Oh, say it isn’t so! If Android can do it, why not, Microsoft?
3) Not a Unified email. Uh-oh.
4) No Cut and Paste. We discussed that one before, and it could be showing up in 2011.
5) No Apps. Oh no.
6) No Desktop Client. This isn’t good, is it?
7) Three Years Too Late.
I don’t know about that last one, but I will say that WP7 doesn’t look like it is all it is cracked up to be.

A recent addition to the LG mobile phone lineup, the LG GS170, gave me more than a few troubles recently when I went to have a look at it. It did offer some welcome features, and some worthwhile facets to its operation, but it’s also got a lot of problems to it–a LOT of them.
The LG GS170 is a flip phone that offers Bluetooth connectivity, speakerphone, three different kinds of messaging capability (text, picture and instant), a phone book with sufficient capacity for a thousand entries, alarm clock, notepad, calculator, voice recorder, a VGA camera (shoots in your choice of 640
