nokian8windowsphone7. Microsoft Will Allow Nokia to Customize ‘Everything’ in Windows Phone 7

As we just told you Microsoft and Nokia will be entering into a special partnership that will see Microsoft properties like Windows Phone 7, Xbox Live, Office and Bing make the jump to Nokia hardware. This would be in an attempt to bring Nokia back up to speed with competitors and to eventually do away with their aging Symbian platform.

However, this doesn’t seem to be your typical developer-manufacturer partnership as, say, Microsoft and HTC have. Instead, Microsoft will be giving Nokia an unprecedented level of freedom over the Windows Phone software they choose to install on their devices. In other words, Microsoft is giving Nokia the ability to tinker with Windows Phone 7′s underlying code at a very deep level – but this doesn’t seem to be something Nokia is interested in. Instead, Elop says, the company will remain cautious and focus on maintaining compatibility across the entire Windows Phone 7 ecosystem.

This is shaping up to be quite interesting as Nokia hardware running Windows Phone 7 is, quite obviously, unlike what we’ve seen in the past. Will it help the company come back to relevance or should they have went the Android route? Let us know what you think.
