Install0us 4 Installous Gets A Major Update

Infamous jailbreak application Installous just had a major update and now looks better than it ever did. For those of you who don’t know, Installous is an application that lets you download cracked apps on your iPhone. In short, it’s like the App Store for cracked apps.

I have to admit that the app has been beautifully designed. It looks great and seems to work as advertised. This being said, we at iDB strongly disapprove of anything related to pirating apps…

I’m not into downloading cracked applications. I can afford to spend $.99 on Angry Birds or any other app, so that’s not really an issue. I have to admit though that I’ve used Installous before while traveling internationally. That’s something that is often disregarded, but depending on where you are in the world, you might not be able to download certain applications from the App Store.

When we were in Thailand last year for example, my lovely fiancee’s iPod Touch would not connect to the US iTunes Store, no matter what. The only way for her to download applications was to get them via Installous. Back in the US, I got her the new iPhone 4 and she legally downloaded copies of the apps she wasn’t able to get installed during our trip.

Something tells me there are a lot of you out there who use Installous. If so, would you leave a comment and explain why you use it?

App Store Icon e1294357171915 The Mac App Store Has Opened, Brings Popular iOS Games to the Mac

The Mac App Store has opened. If you go to Software Update on your Mac, you can download the latest version of OS X. This update includes a shiny new app on your dock called the “App Store.” Don’t get confused, this isn’t the iOS App Store on your iPhone; all of these apps are Mac-specific apps.

While the Mac App Store does bring many great new apps for the Mac, many iOS apps that we all know are also available through the Mac App Store. Specifically, there are many popular games from the iOS App Store now available on the Mac. The new Mac releases of these games are basically fullscreen versions with some added features and content.

And yes, you can now play Angry Birds in full, HD resolution on your 27-inch iMac…

The Mac App Store borrows a lot of elements from the App Store we all have on our iPhones. Apple duplicated the way that the store is structured from the already-existing App Store for iOS.

When you open the Mac App Store, it looks a lot like iTunes. The content is in the same layout, and there are all of the familiar charts and categories. You can even redeem promo codes like the iOS App Store.

What’s really neat about the Mac App Store is its catalog. There are already a lot of great apps to choose from. Some are free, some are paid.

As I perused through some of the apps available, I noticed that there are many popular iOS games already available for download. Most of them are at the top of the “paid” charts. I love Angry Birds, Flight Control and The Incident, so I downloaded the Mac versions to see what I thought.

Angry Birds for Mac

As if I needed anything else to distract me on my computer. Now I have Angry Birds in all of its fullscreen glory. There’s not much different content-wise from the iOS version with Angry Birds for Mac, but the developers have promised more levels in future updates. Currently, all of the Angry Birds levels from iOS are playable.

At first, I wasn’t sure if I was going to like Angry Birds without the iPhone’s touchscreen. However, when I played the first level, I realized that the Mac version is just as good. The app uses the Mac’s trackpad to control the birds though touching, pulling and releasing. There is no clicking. It seems a little weird at first, but after the first time it’s actually a really intuitive way to play the game. I was impressed.

Angry Birds costs $4.99 in the Mac App Store.

Flight Control

Flight Control has been an App Store favorite for a long time. For many people, it’s in the top ten list for the best games the App Store has to offer. Like Angry Birds, Flight Control HD for Mac is basically just a giant version of its iOS counterpart.

For the Mac, Flight Control has high resolution graphics and “snap-to landing zones” for a more suitable experience with a mouse or trackpad. Instead of using your finger to draw your flight paths, you draw with your cursor. It’s pretty straightforward, and still plenty of fun.

Flight Control HD also costs $4.99 in the Mac App Store.

The Incident

The Incident is my favorite game on the iPhone. It has been since I mentioned it in my last roundup of awesome iPhone games. Needless to say, I was eager to download the Mac version when I saw it in the Mac App Store.

The Incident for Mac has the same levels and features from the iPhone game that are present on the Mac. If any iOS game was also made to work with a keyboard, it’s The Incident. Instead of tapping on a touch screen, you use your Mac’s arrow keys to control Frank Solway as he dodges falling objects. To jump, use the space bar. I love playing The Incident in fullscreen mode on my Mac. It’s such a great game.

The Incident costs $2.99 in the Mac App Store. That’s a pretty reasonable price.

Those were three iOS games that are now on the Mac App Store. There are others; I’ve spotted ones like Osmos, Pac-Man, Zen Bound and Enigmo 2.

What do you think of the Mac App Store now that it’s released? Will you be buying any certain apps? I have a feeling that some people won’t like the idea of “blown up” iPhone games on the Mac. I do. What about you?

mzlfvgjicpk320x480 75 200x300 Burn the Rope for iOS for $2I’ve heard of the mobile game Cut the Rope before, and it even has an update. It is a very habit-forming game, and so will Burn the Rope.

Burn the Rope is a game that is essentially what it says, a game where you burn the rope. Unfortunately, the flames only burn upward, so you must turn the iPhone or other iDevice in the proper direction to make certain the rope will burn.

As you go through the levels, you will have different bugs trying to stop your rope from burning. I would imagine that there are other obstacles in the way too.

You should be able to get it for the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and channel your inner pyromaniac.

android market logo Report: Android Market Surpasses 200,000 Apps Available for Download

For as long as we remember it’s laregely been a phone’s hardware that decides whether it dies or lives with nice software being frosting on the cake. Now a days, it’s quite the oppostie with even underpowered smartphones powered by Android getting more recognition that devices like the Nokia N8. However, while the operating system is what draws a consumer in, it’s the third party software that keeps them coming back for more.

Apple is the winner in this department astheir App Store has been chugging along nicely for quite some time. Google is quickly catching up with their Android Market which, according to a report, has just surpassed 200,000 apps available for download.

With hard hitting mobile games like Angry Birds already available on Android, it won’t be long until all of the hardest hitting iOS apps will make the jump. If this is the case, the battle between iOS and Android is going to be an interesting one to follow in the years to come.

mzl.ukqfcmhw.320x480 75 186x280 NinJump game free on iOS and AndroidI realize that a lot of Android users are playing Angry Birds, but I found another free game for Android and iOS called NinJump.

NinJump involves the main character climbing a building that seems to be infinite stories high. On the way, you can take out birds, squirrels, and other ninjas.

The game controls are a matter of finger flicking from one wall to the other, slicing in mid-jump. If you get hit, you fall, and then you got to start climbing all over again.

Of course, you can share your score on Twitter and Facebook. Not that I did, because I didn’t do so well, honestly. Still, I got it for free on Android, so I can’t really complain.
