As is generally the case on Thursdays, we’re going neck deep into the depths of the Apple App Store to see what interesting things we can bring your way. Today’s review target is 5-0 Radio, a scanner application that lets you follow all the police drama in your hometown, or anywhere else, for that matter.
Once you’ve loaded the app, you’ll get a whole bunch of choices–the ability to browse scanner feeds, select from the top one hundred scanner feeds or pick from a panoply of other features. You’ll interact with all these browsing options by way of a reel-style menu that basically lets you roll the screen downward and upward until you find the scanner feed you want to listen to, or the closest to it. Don’t worry if you live in a small town and don’t think you’d be able to get your scanner, as I live in a particular smallish little burg and my county sheriff’s office was on the list.
The upshots here are surprisingly many. The app is extraordinarily easy to use, the interface is smooth and clean and downright simple to handle, and if you want to listen to a police scanner on your iPhone or iPod Touch, then this is a great place to do exactly that. And besides all that, the app is free. That makes this an incredible app, except for two points.
One, you need to be online to use this. There’s no other way, and that makes sense. It’s basically just a giant streaming app, so of course you need an internet connection. And two, all it does is patch you into a police scanner. Nothing else. So you definitely have to have an interest in listening in on local law enforcement to get a lot of value out of this one.
And if you do want to keep up with your local constabulary, then 5-0 Radio is going to be a great choice to make that happen.
When it comes to sounds that tickle the eardrums, I would consider myself a mass consumer. Whether it be local talk radio, sports, podcast, numerous music stations or even my 28GB+ of mp3s, it is safe to assume that I have my auditory nerves tingling as often as humanly possible. One way that I have found to mass consume both new and old music that I like is through a little website that many have become familiar with by the name of last.fm. The problem, as you can tell, is that I like to listen to far more than just music.
So what is a podcast, talk radio, news and music fiend to do? Why not download the new app AudioPress and let your entire media world be transformed. Combining feeds of everything that you like from all mediums, along with the latest news that is custom fit to you, might be a recipe for success. But what else does this new game-changing software bring to the table?
“AUDIOPRESS brings you the spoken word in all its forms—old and new—so you can hear all the news, entertainment, and information you want while on-the-go.
And with AUDIOPRESS, discovering content and creating sync-free playlists is easy, and intelligent playback can automatically play current episodes only and skip content you’ve already heard, so listening is ‘start-and-go!’” — VIA AudioPress description in App Store
If there were such a thing as custom designed applications, I believe that this would be the one made for me. I spend hours every week listening to numerous different forms of content that I love. The problem is that finding the type of information and entertainment can take months to line-up. This is where AudioPress could be the personal savior of my free time. Now the trick will be living up to the promises that they make in the trailer below. Give the app a download, because I can assure you that the sticker price of absolutely nothing is not going to break any bank.
The Energizer AP1201 case for the iPhone 4 definitely reminds me of the Milano that I saw from SaFPWR, not to mention some Mophie products. The AP1201 is designed to charge the iPhone while you use it.
This is Marble Mixer, a game where you can shoot marbles with a flick of a finger. It can be played with 1-4 players in three ways. Space Mania allows you to shoot for points on a black hole type thing that you have to play to believe. I also played Monster picnic, which allows for shooting marbles into a spinning hole. There is another called Table Tactics which I didn’t get a chance to play.
It is available for the iPad for $1.99, which you can get now at the iTunes store.
iLuv has a long history of cranking out too many iDevice speaker docks to count, so we can’t say we’re shocked to see ‘em pushing out an option that’s suitable for the iPad. It’s tough to make one of these actually look respectable when it’s hoisting a 9.7-inch tablet in place of a pocket-friendly PMP, but the iMM747 actually looks fairly decent. There’s a triple driver speaker network, a radiator subwoofer, an auxiliary line input (3.5mm) and a 30-pin Dock Connector that’ll also play nice with your iPhone and / or iPod. If you’re in the market, it’ll be splashing down in the next few days for $149.99.
