skypeinvite Skype to Finally Announce Video Calling at CES 2011?

CES 2011 is just around the corner which means a whole slew of new devices and technologies are sure to get announced. While we’ve had some speculation over what will be announced, new rumors and reports are surfacing left and right. The latest of such rumors to surface is one surrounding the popular VoIP service Skype.

Skype has been an immensely popular voice and video chatting service for desktop platforms but has made its way to mobile platforms like iOS and Android as well. However, one thing that the mobile application does not feature is the ability to make video conference calls – a highly sought after featured offering by competitors like fring.

However, Skype has begun sending out invites to an event they will be holding during CES 2011. What exactly with the VoIP giant be announcing, you ask? Well, our best best (and half the Internet’s) is that they will finally be taking the wraps off of their mobile video calling service.

Unfortunately, until that is made official, that remains nothing more than speculation.

droidincredible Android ‘Gingerbread’ 2.3 ROM for HTC Droid Incredible Nearing Completion

Android is one of the hottest mobile platforms and its latest version, 2.3 aka Gingerbread, is the talk of the town. However, seeing how some devices have either yet to get or have just gotten the Android ‘Froyo’ 2.2 update it would be ridiculous to think that Gingerbread is coming soon. Luckily, for those of you who don’t mind going the not so official route, the Android community has managed to port the latest version to various handsets.

The most recent of such handsets to get the unofficial Gingerbread treatment seems to be the HTC Droid Incredible. According to various reports that have surfaced today, the Android hacking community has nearly completed an Android 2.3 ROM for the Droid Incredible. Of course, this doesn’t guarantee it will be out soon but if the past is anything to go by, it sure will be.

Be sure to check back where we’ll keep you posted on the latest Android developments.

18673WalkingDead app lg 216x280 The Walking Dead App Review–Huge Comic ClearinghouseOne of the biggest new shows on television right now is The Walking Dead, and there’s a good reason. The comic that spawned it is one that a lot of people are fond of, and as a result, the series is getting a lot of that love too. I happen to be fond of it myself, and when I went into the Apple App Store as I so often do on Thursdays, the discovery of a Walking Dead app was a great one.

The Walking Dead app is basically a collection of the various back issues of The Walking Dead comic. You’ll be able to read at least part of the first one for free, and the rest will be available for purchase, making it a clearinghouse for all the back issues, as well as a way to track and see when the new one is finally out.

Believe me, that’s a question I’ve asked myself more than once: is the new Walking Dead out yet? And now, with this app, I can check and see if it’s available.  Plus, in this format, it works really well for reading, as the touchscreen makes it startlingly simple to flip pages–metaphorically, anyway–and the screen is just large enough to make the pages legible.

The down side here is that, while the app itself is free, you’ll be paying for every issue you decide to download. This is only fair, of course, but it’s worth warning you about that the app itself won’t have a whole lot of value until you shell out a load of cash getting the content in place. It’s like the app itself is the start of a great app, but it won’t truly be one until you get the content in.

Still though, if you like the Walking Dead, the Walking Dead app is going to be just what you want–and it’ll sure beat having stacks of comic books on hand.

The Good

Good resource for keeping track of new releases

It’s The Walking Dead, in one place!

Easy to read and use

The Bad

It’s only one comic series

Most everything only available at charge

Score 7 / 10

Feed Al offers physics based puzzles – a genre about which I’m sure you’re thinking, “oh great, another one.” The true selling point here is twofold, though. First of all, it’s from the guys who made Finger Physics, which has to be good news. Second of all, it offers a rather funky location-based high score system which goes on to help you within the game.

feedal4 200x300 Feed Al ReviewThe actual game is pretty good fun. It’s down to you to get a small globe from one side of the screen to the other while collecting stars along the way. You can make the globe bounce off structures through the use of moveable objects which can then divert the globe into the path of the collectible stars. Collect stars, earn points. Simple stuff but fun. Some levels add a further twist by locking the end of the level, forcing you to ensure you hit the key along the way. Other oddities are abound too such as some platforms instantly wiping you out, some platforms can be destroyed and others affecting the way you bounce. Rather than work on a level by level basis, everything is seamless which makes a pleasant change.

It’s all good, solid physics based fun and that fact alone makes for a satisfying experience. Throw in the location based high score system, PlacePlay, and things become that bit more interesting. PlacePlay homes in on your location and allows you to have local leaderboards. Placing high on your local leaderboard offers you points which can then be used to buy boosts to help you in the rest of the game. These boosts aid you by providing things like a wall to stop you falling to the side, lock removal tools and more. They’re not essential for success but they help you a treat. The idea of competing with people locally is great, although I suspect due to where I live, I won’t have much competition. In big cities though, it’ll be immensely satisfying to top the leaderboard.

Feed Al is really good fun. It offers a quirky appearance with a great leaderboard concept within PlacePlay, as well as satisfying puzzles to complete. It’s really worth a look. It’s almost certainly going to hook you.
