hpslate500px HP Slate 500 Gets Official For Enterprise Use, Priced at $799 with Windows 7

If you’ve been paying attention to pretty much any publication (including MobileWhack) you’ll know that tablets are all the rage. Of course, if you’re an Apple fanboy you’ll have an even deeper understanding of this as it was the iPad that started this crazy. Luckily, there are many tablets on the horizon that look to compete with Apple’s tablet such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab which is powered by Google’s Android mobile operating system.

Another tablet that was in the pipeline that many thought would give the iPad a much needed run for its money is the HP Slate powered by Microsoft Windows. Unfortunately, due to the fact that Windows is not optimized for use with tablets, HP slashed the product and instead destined the device for enterprise use.

Today, HP has officially announced the Slate 500 which packs an 8.6-inch capacitive touchscreen display, 1.86GHz Intel Atom Z540 processor, 2GB of RAM, 64GB of SSD storage, an HDMI-out port which will output video nicely at 1080p thanks to Broadcom’s Crystal HD GPU. All of this hardware will be powered by Microsoft’s   Phone 7 professional, so no webOS just yet. What is interesting here, however, is the face that the HP Slate 500 packs a Wacom active digitizer which will allow users to take notes with a stylus. On the camera front we’re looking at a front facing VGA camera and a 3 megapixel rear facing camera.

Sounds pretty good if you can settle with a Windows 7 powered tablet, doesn’t it? It can be yours for $799 on a currently unannounced date. We’ll keep you posted.

nook15 Barnes & Noble Nook Second Generation eBook Reader to Feature Full Color Touchscreen?

As you already know, we’ve been telling you about quite a bit of different tablets from various companies. Of course there’s Apple’s iPad which started it all and then we’ve got the Samsung Galaxy Tab and even the HP Slate. However, while tablets cover a broad spectrum of niches, many have argued that it’s not the best eBook reader on the market. User gripes with eReading on a tablet usually focus on eye strain which there is no getting around as many tablets feature a very bright LCD screen. eBook readers, on the other hand, with their e-ink displays almost entirely eliminate eye strain as it’s much more like reading a printed book than a computer document.

One popular e-ink touting eBook reader is the Nook from Barnes & Noble. This device capitalized on the success of the Kindle but threw in Google’s Android along with a small navigational touchscreen. However, if rumors are to be believed, Barnes & Noble will be changing things up quite a bit with the forthcoming release of the second generation Nook. According to these rumors, the new Nook will feature a full touchscreen display much like a tablet. Unfortunately, there isn’t much else to go by right now so we’re going to be left guessing until Barnes & Noble comes forth to officially announcing something further.

500x gyrosynth GyroSynth for the iPhoneI have seen a lot of music making apps on the iPhone, like DopplerPad, even a whole rock band that was able to play on iPhones alone.

This one is GyroSynth, and it uses the iPhone 4’s gyroscope as well as the touchscreen for some interesting synthesizing sounds with roll, pitch, and yaw. I would imagine that it would take a lot of practice to get a good rhythm going, but what instrument does.

You can try it out for yourself for just $1.

palmpre2sidebyside Palm Pre 2 Coming to Verizon Wireless With webOS In Tow?

If you’ve been paying attention to the tech community you’ll know that HP recently acquired Palm. While this gave HP access to Palm’s line up of devices such as the Palm Pre and Palm Pixi, what is more important is webOS. This mobile operating system has been developed from the ground up by Palm and is expected to make its way to new tablets, smartphones and even printers in the future.

However, until that happens we’re going to have to settle with the various devices currently powered by the mobile operating system, as detailed above. Luckily, it seems that another smartphone is just over the horizon that will fall into line with the already released webOS powered devices. As we’ve told you in the past this device will be called the Palm Pre 2.

While we’ve heard that this device might be coming to Sprint, we’ve gotten word today that the device is destined for Verizon Wireless as well. This wouldn’t be too far fetched considering Verizon is home to other devices such as the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus.

Will you purchase a Palm Pre 2 when it hits store shelves (whenever that may be)?
