A funny thing happened last night as Google briefly launched the Google Latitude iPhone app in the Japanese App Store, only to quickly pull it back down. While the company hasn’t made any statements regarding the “blink and you missed it” accidental launch, it would seem that the new app is primed and ready for release at any second.

Google Latitude map 200x300 Google Latitude May Appear at Any MomentGoogle Latitude allows users to easy track one another by displaying the locations of friends and contacts on a map. This way, if a friend asks you to meet them at Starbucks for coffee, you can instantly see which cafe they’re sitting at and head directly there. The service continually updates so you can keep track of your friends and vice-versa, but sharing settings are heavily restricted and there’s an option to turn off tracking altogether if you’d rather go off the grid for a bit.

Latitude has sort of been available for the iPhone for well over a year, but not as a native app. Thus, it can’t run in the backgound on the iPhone and is ultimately rather pointless for most users. The app has been a longstanding feature of phones running on the Android operating system, but it just now seems that the app may be on the cusp of approval from Apple.

The two companies have been at odds with one another for a while since Apple originally saw Google as a threat to iPhone market dominance, but the two companies have been warming to each other recently and it seems they may be about to settle into a more friendly relationship. Last month Google Voice finally appeared on the App Store, so it seems Latitude is set to follow in its footsteps. Also, with the launch of Google eBooks earlier this week it seems the two rivals may have finally turned the corner. More than anyone else, this is a big win for consumers.

androidlogo Over 300,000 Android Phone Activations Every Day

Do you have any doubt that Android is quickly becoming the biggest name in the mobile world? Well, if the immense amount of Android powered handsets wasn’t enough then perhaps you should check out a tweet recently sent by Google’s very own Andy Rubin.

According to Mr. Rubin, 300,000 mobile phones are being activated each and every day powered by the Android mobile operating system. To put this into comparison, Apple CEO Steve Jobs took center stage back in September to let us know that there were roughly 230,000 iOS activations per day. Just to note, Rubin makes an effort to say phones, while Jobs says iOS devices in general which includes the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. This would lead one to believe that if Google factored in tablets, those figures would be much higher.

What ever the case may be, Android is growing, and it’s growing fast. Have you hopped on board yet? Do you plan on doing so?

18673WalkingDead app lg 216x280 The Walking Dead App Review–Huge Comic ClearinghouseOne of the biggest new shows on television right now is The Walking Dead, and there’s a good reason. The comic that spawned it is one that a lot of people are fond of, and as a result, the series is getting a lot of that love too. I happen to be fond of it myself, and when I went into the Apple App Store as I so often do on Thursdays, the discovery of a Walking Dead app was a great one.

The Walking Dead app is basically a collection of the various back issues of The Walking Dead comic. You’ll be able to read at least part of the first one for free, and the rest will be available for purchase, making it a clearinghouse for all the back issues, as well as a way to track and see when the new one is finally out.

Believe me, that’s a question I’ve asked myself more than once: is the new Walking Dead out yet? And now, with this app, I can check and see if it’s available.  Plus, in this format, it works really well for reading, as the touchscreen makes it startlingly simple to flip pages–metaphorically, anyway–and the screen is just large enough to make the pages legible.

The down side here is that, while the app itself is free, you’ll be paying for every issue you decide to download. This is only fair, of course, but it’s worth warning you about that the app itself won’t have a whole lot of value until you shell out a load of cash getting the content in place. It’s like the app itself is the start of a great app, but it won’t truly be one until you get the content in.

Still though, if you like the Walking Dead, the Walking Dead app is going to be just what you want–and it’ll sure beat having stacks of comic books on hand.

The Good

Good resource for keeping track of new releases

It’s The Walking Dead, in one place!

Easy to read and use

The Bad

It’s only one comic series

Most everything only available at charge

Score 7 / 10

appleipad iPad 2 to Skip on AMOLED Display, Stick With LCD?

Tablets are all around us now a days with hardware manufacturers across the board announcing their offerings. The single most hyped tablet is without a doubt Apple’s iPad. This device has time and time again topped the charts when it comes to tablet use and is currently the reigning king.

However, now that the iPad has been out for quite some time it’s almost time to start thinking about its successor – commonly known as the iPad 2. While we have no official confirmation as to what exactly this new iOS powered tablet will include we’ve speculated that it will feature a Retina Display and FaceTime support, at least. Some publications have speculated that Apple will do away with the current LCD display and instead make the switch to AMOLED.

Unfortunately, reports have surfaced today that say the hardware manufacturer behind the iPad 2′s screens has confirmed that they are in fact LCD and not AMOLED. Of course, this could be complete hogwash considering it didn’t come from Apple and instead some unconfirmed source but it’s something to think about nonetheless.
