Android – Iphone – Applications

The Meningitis Trust is a UK-based organization dedicated to improving the lives of those impacted by meningitis. One of their signature initiatives is the “signs and symptoms” card, a handout detailing indicators of meningitis. Now, the Trust has released an iPhone app in a similar vein, one that hopes to make a very real difference in the lives of many.

Why are signs and symptoms important? As the Meningitis Trust will quickly tell you, “knowing the signs and symptoms of the disease and what you should do if you suspect it, CAN and DOES save lives. Meningitis can kill within four hours so fast action is essential.” In other words: sooner is far better than the later, so the more you know meningitis, the more likely you are to react in a timely and appropriate manner.

The app contains a solid database of important information: typical symptoms in babies, toddlers, children, and adults; advice for what to do if you think you have the disease; a quiz for testing your knowledge; and information on meningitis resources. And in keeping with its altruistic goals, it’s free, so if you’re curious about any aspect of meningitis it’s probably worth checking out. It’s an impressive educational offering. Just keep in mind that this isn’t a diagnostic tool — if you’re in doubt, paying your doctor a visit is probably a better choice than relying solely on a single app.

You can download Meningitis Signs and Symptoms in the App Store.

Samsung has long been one of the leading names in the tech industry on just about every front. Not only have they had an immensely successful line up of HDTVs but they also have the recently released Samsung Galaxy S smartphone that has posted high sales numbers spanning just about every wireless carrier. Add to that the forthcoming Android 2.2 powered Samsung Galaxy Tab 7-inch tablet and it’s obvious why Samsung is virtually a household name.

Well, while Samsung has favored Android (and with good reason considering the above mentioned deviced) it is not the only platform they will be pushing out handsets for. In fact, they just made it official today that they will be licensing Windows Phone 7 for use with future devices.

Of course, this is nothing we didn’t already kno as many Windows Phone 7 powered Samsung handsets have been talked about in the past but at least it’s nice to get official confirmation, right?

Samsung and Microsoft join forces for Windows Phone 7 products

Finalizing the Windows Phone 7 license agreement, Samsung is committed to delivering Windows Phone 7 based smartphones to the market for holiday 2010

SEOUL, KOREA – September 30, 2010 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, a global leader in mobile technology, today announced the completion of an agreement to use the Windows Phone 7 platform and related application software as a key component of Samsung’s smartphone portfolio.

With the signing of this contract, Samsung makes a long term commitment to including Windows Phone 7 in its smartphone portfolio. Samsung plans to launch several models based on Windows Phone 7 this year in the US, Europe and Asia.

“For years, Samsung has been a key partner in bringing new Windows phones to customers all over the world,” said Steve Guggenheimer, Corporate Vice President, OEM Division at Microsoft. “Windows Phone 7 is an important release, and we look forward to deepening our collaboration with Samsung on mobile devices and beyond, with our multi-screen strategy.”

WP Hong, Executive Vice President and Head of Product Strategy Team said “The addition of Windows Phone 7 smartphones to Samsung’s smartphone portfolio is a significant milestone for us. Samsung’s new Windows Phone 7 based smartphones will play a key role to reinforce Samsung’s leadership in smartphone market. The new phones are distinguished by unique and diverse experiences built from Microsoft’s deep portfolio such as Xbox LIVE, Office, Zune, Windows Live, Bing and more.
