The Meningitis Trust is a UK-based organization dedicated to improving the lives of those impacted by meningitis. One of their signature initiatives is the “signs and symptoms” card, a handout detailing indicators of meningitis. Now, the Trust has released an iPhone app in a similar vein, one that hopes to make a very real difference in the lives of many.
Why are signs and symptoms important? As the Meningitis Trust will quickly tell you, “knowing the signs and symptoms of the disease and what you should do if you suspect it, CAN and DOES save lives. Meningitis can kill within four hours so fast action is essential.” In other words: sooner is far better than the later, so the more you know meningitis, the more likely you are to react in a timely and appropriate manner.
The app contains a solid database of important information: typical symptoms in babies, toddlers, children, and adults; advice for what to do if you think you have the disease; a quiz for testing your knowledge; and information on meningitis resources. And in keeping with its altruistic goals, it’s free, so if you’re curious about any aspect of meningitis it’s probably worth checking out. It’s an impressive educational offering. Just keep in mind that this isn’t a diagnostic tool — if you’re in doubt, paying your doctor a visit is probably a better choice than relying solely on a single app.
This is one that allows the Apple’s logo to have a red hue, and make it look like the HAL 9000. You would have to see 2001: A Space Odyssey to really let this scare you.
Stardunk is a pretty amazing little game that was the first, to my knowledge, to get massively multiplayer right. The game seamlessly allowed for 10 people to play against each other at once with no noticeable lag of any kind. Categorizing Stardunk though is a bit tough. Is it a basketball game? Is it a physics game? All I know is that it is fun.
The problem with the whole Stardunk concept is that it requires a ton of people to participate in order for the game to work as intended. That’s not saying that it isn’t fun on its own, but the true potential is only unlocked when you have games going with 10 people playing at once. Unfortunately the sales haven’t been quite as astounding as Godzilab would’ve hoped (piracy has also been an issue), so they are looking at a new model to suck people in.
Starting this Saturday, Sep. 25, Godzilab is switching Stardunk to a free demo model, meaning that the game is free, but after your tenth game you must purchase the rest via in-app purchase. This new model will hopefully get more people to try the game out (and hopefully purchase), allowing for a much more exciting experience.
For those of you who already have the game but have put it away for whatever reason, there are a few new things to sweeten of the pot. In addition to new game themes, new balls, and new stats, Stardunk now has its leaderboards on Game Center.
If you haven’t tried Stardunk yet, now’s the best time to do so. It’s hard to beat free.
It goes without saying that there are some things in life that I don’t know. As much as I would love to convince everyone otherwise, I am far from a genius and more often than not turn to the internet to fill in my educational void. This is where an innovative video “how-to” site site by the name of Howcast comes in. Combining informative videos amusing presentation, they have taken an interesting new approach to teaching the masses. Sure, some of the clips may share a similar vibe with an Enzite commercial, but fear not, all of the content is solid.
If you are looking for a perfect example of the kind of information and presentation that the site has pioneered, check out this clip entitled “How to Freestyle Rap.”
I realize that I still will have no future dropping a beat, I still feel like I know a little bit more about how to be successful. With a lighthearted delivery and fun content like “How To Make Your Dorm Room Livable” or “How To Set Up a Hayride,” you are bound to find just the information you are looking for and maybe even some that you weren’t.
The problem is that the site’s videos are ran using a flash based media player, therefor rendering them useless on iOS devices. Well that was the case until a few weeks ago when they debuted the Howcast iPad application. Now that their impressive back library of videos have been ported to our platform of choice, we will be able to soak in all of the fun on the run. Plus, as you can see in some of the screenshots, everything is seamless and simple to navigate as well. Possibly best of all is the pricetag, which is a heaping helping of absolutely nothing. So act fast and download the app, before they wise up and decide to make some money!
Times for Mac, you know, for that computer thing you use, is an exceptionally pretty RSS aggregator that turns sloppy RSS feeds into a nice looking digital newspaper. To my knowledge, Times for Mac is the best looking/performing RSS aggregator out there… all it needed was an iPad app to sync to.
Well now the Times iPad app is out, and it does everything that you’d want it to do, and probably a bit more. It’s certainly not the only RSS aggregator in the App Store, but boy does it look pretty. If you’re familiar with apps like Flipboard, you’ll understand this one right away, as it does away with the traditional google reader type interface and reformats all the headlines into more of a print-focused layout. Add that to the gorgeous large screen on the iPad, and this looks to be a winner.
Like any good RSS reader, the individual news items also come in through an integrated web viewer, so you never have to leave the app to read an article. Times for the iPad allows you to click through to the original website, share on Facebook or Twitter, or just save to a special Shelf for later reading. You can also customize the views, making one page for just straightforward headlines, and another for some of your favorite photo blog layouts. The best part of the app is that it syncs with the desktop version (or will, with an upcoming 2.0 update to the Mac application), creating the ultimate mobile RSS solution.
Pick Times up in the app store for $7.99 and start reading your news in style.
