Scholastic Pocket Texting DevicesWe all know that kids just love to text, so Scholastic, which I am going to assume is not the company that publishes the Harry Potter books, has created the Pocket Texting Devices.

These devices work within 600 feet of each other, and this creates a network of 24 of these devices to make messages of about 40 characters. It looks like it is a mutli-tap keyboard, and best of all, it doesn’t involve any carrier!

In other words, you can get your text-crazy kids a $16 portable device and they can send all the messages they want without carrier fees.

mzl.qgbugkxb.320x480 75 300x200 Pocket Legends Content Update Includes Aliens, More MMO GoodnessI’ll be honest: I think Pocket Legends is pretty darn cool. I reviewed the game back in its infancy, and since then it’s continued to expand. If you haven’t played it before, Pocket Legends is a true MMORPG, complete with PvP, boss fights, dungeons, and plenty of loot.

The newest update charges you with “preventing a disaster of galactic proportions” as aliens once again threaten the land of Pocket Legends. Of course, this is mostly pretense for giving players some welcome features: a higher level cap, boss-filled dungeons, two PvP maps, and more loot. Who doesn’t love loot?

Here’s the list of other recent updates:

Lost Expedition Base Camp: a new towne full of quests and loot
Leaderboards: compete for most kills, most deaths, K/D ratio, most gold
Loadouts that allow you to save and reload different configurations
Item sets (collections of items that give additional bonuses when equipped)
An additional inventory slot for wearing fancy helmets
UI updates including the ability to map all 12 of your skills at once
Exploding barrels to add to the carnage in PvP
Plus a whole lot more!

If you haven’t tried Pocket Legends yet, now’s as good a time as any; the game keeps growing, with updates pushed out almost every two days, and if you don’t mind its simplicity and occasional UI annoyances, Pocket Legends can be a real blast. It’s free to try (you don’t even need to register anymore!), so what are you waiting for?

pockbook iq lead image 1282335507 280x170 Pocketbook to introduce five new e readers at IFAThis isn’t the first time that we have reported on PocketBook, and they plan to release five new models of e-readers to be released at IFA in September.

The release includes a pair of premium units known as the 603 and 903, and a pair of entry-levels known as the 602 and 902 units. The models will have 2GB of internal storage, Linux based OS, as well as WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, with higher end versions having 3G and even a Wacom touchscreen. The 600 series will have a 6-inch screen, and the 900 a 9-inch.

The last model is the “entertainment model” PocketBook IQ with three case color options, 7-inch TFT color touchscreen, WiFi, Bluetooth, and Android 2.0.

I’m sure we’ll find out more about these once IFA rolls around.

mzl.twmqyyry.320x480 75 300x200 Pocket God Comics Hitting App Store, Real Stores!Up until now, App Store sensation Pocket God has revolved around whatever you (as the de-facto god) did to your poor pygmy subjects. The folks at Bolt Creative, however, decided to bless the pygmies with initiative of their own…and their antics and adventures are the subject of the new Pocket God Comics. Yep, that’s right. A real, honest-to-goodness comic spin-off of the famous pygmy-torture game. Let the mayhem begin.

Pocket God Comics hit the App Store on Tuesday. Your $0.99 purchase includes the first issue; later releases can be obtained through in-app purchase. The app is universal (iPhone + iPod + iPad compatible), with higher-resolution artwork on display for the iPad version. The art looks fantastic, even on a small device, and the pygmies are as entertaining as ever.

But wait! Why should the pygmy conquest be limited to the virtual world? Bolt Creative is trying to push a print comic, too. Of course, stores need to carry the Pocket God comic before you can buy it, so Bolt is staging a contest. Take a look at the blog post for full details, but essentially: print a flyer that asks the comic store to stock Pocket God. Go to comic store. Take a picture of yourself with the flyer. Give flyer to comic store staff, then email picture to Bolt Creative. Pocket God gets exposure; you get a code for a Jet Pack in Ooga Jump as well as an entry in a drawing for a $1000 Apple Gift Certificate.

Pocket God is really a stunning success story—it hasn’t left the Top 50 for over a year—and it’s really neat to see the developers branching out into the “real world.” Hurrah for pygmies!

Here it is, the grand description of Plunderland, the new game by JohnnyTwoShoes. It is what Pocket God would be if everyone were Pirates.

IMG 6189 300x200 Plunderland ReviewRather than set out to be a great game, Plunderland, like Pocket God before it, set out to give you a great experience. The premise is painfully simple, you get a boat with some pirates that you must guide (via accelerometer) to the next port, looting and pillaging everything that you find along the way. The only real difference that you have with this and Pocket God is that you can die and your ship can be sunk.

Along your path to new ports, you will encounter the British navy, tribals, and other “things” that all can sink you and your ship. You have to defend yourself using a combination of fast tilt movements and slinging canon balls at the enemy. Fortunately, once the enemy is sunk, or the villagers are dealt with (and picked up and shaken around a bit, Pocket God style), you can take their gold.

With your gold, you can buy advancements to your ship, such as new canons, front of the ship mermaids that auto-collect the gold, and even completely new ships to hold more stuff. Don’t worry about not collecting enough for upgrades though, because you have to collect a certain amount per level though to move on to the next one, so be sure to shake all the villagers that you can.

Beyond the gameplay, the real reason to buy Plunderland is for the striking simplicity. Like Pocket God, everything is made simply from the graphics to the sound. Everything is bright and cheerful, and except for the fact that you are plundering villagers and killing enemy pirates, but even that is done in a fun way. The best part of the game though is the music that starts when you get near a tribal village. You’ll know what I’m talking about when you get there.

If Plunderland is updated as often as Pocket God, there is really no reason that it couldn’t become as popular. It’s just as fun and has more to do, but it certainly will need constant updates to keep things fresh.
