LG made their mark on society with several hard hitting phones such as the Chocolate (retro, huh?) but have trailed behind competitors like HTC and Samsung when it comes to high powered smartphones. Luckily, they are doing what they can to keep up and have brought one of their most popular Android devices, the Optimus One, to the U.S.
In fact, those who have the LG Optimus S for Sprint will be happy to know that the device has today been rooted with a custom ROM already available for download and installation. Seeing how this is a very new development, you’re going to have to be extra careful this time around as things have been known to go wrong.
No word on when the Optimus T and Vortex for T-Mobile and Verizon, respectively, will get a root but it shouldn’t be too long now.
Head here to grab the latest ROM.

Like to tweak your device’s Android build to pull some more functionality out of it? Do you describe yourself as an avid rooter? Well, if that’s the case then you’ll be interested to hear of the latest development that has arose from the Android hacking community.
The particular ROM that this announcement settles on is CyanogenMod CM6.1 RC5. Currently available only for the Motorola Droid, this updated version brings with it lockscreen gestures. This means you will actually be able to draw gestures at your device’s lockscreen (a la the above image) and assign them various actions. This may include, but is not limited to, launching your most used applications, Android’s web browser and more.
As I said, it’s currently available only for the Motorola Droid with a release on other devices currently up in the air. However, as always, we’ll keep you posted as the story unfolds.

Tablets are everywhere but if you’re looking to get down on a great device you’re going to be forced to pay quite the premium. For instance, the Samsung Galaxy Tab, which has been regarded as one of the best Android tablets on the market, costs well over $600 in its current iteration. However, there is another device powered by Android that isn’t exactly marketed as a tablet. Can you guess what it is? The Barnes & Noble Nook Color, of course.
Marketed as an eBook reader, the Nook Color features Android 2.1, an 800MHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, 32GB of additional storage and of course a 7-inch color touchscreen. While it does not feature the normal hardware you’d find in a typical Android tablet like cameras its hardware makes it a more than capable device.
However, without things like the Android Market it’s quite hard to call the Nook Color a tablet as in its current iteration it is quite crippled. However, it has been made known today that the Nook Color has been rooted which means the full app library found within the Android Market is available for download.
No word on when public instructions will be made known but let’s hope it’s sooner rather than later. You can’t go wrong with a $250 Android tablet.

A lot of talk in the mobile world surrounds a smartphone’s operating system. As you know, two of the most talked about mobile operating systems of this day and age are Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android. While the software powering these mobile devices is crucial none of it would ever hit the end consumer had it not been for the hardware.
Luckily, as mobile platforms like iOS and Android increase so does the hardware by which this software is powered. Now a days, it has almost become uncommon to see a high end smartphone with anything less that a 1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM. However, one device fit this criteria and that is the T-Mobile G2.
When first launched many criticized the T-Mobile G2 for having a processor clocked at 800MHz – 200 MHz less than other Android powered smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S and HTC EVO 4G. However, what was made known today will effectively put that criticism to rest.
It seems that our friends over at the XDA-Developers forums have actually managed to overclock the T-Mobile G2′s 800MHz processor to an extremely fast 1.9GHz. Of course, this is far from official so if you’re deciding to do this proceed at your own risk as it could spell disaster for your phone.
However if you’re feeling brave, head here for the instructions.

One of the biggest problems that plagues the Android ecosystem is the fact that there are so many different updates to the software. Normally this wouldn’t be a problem but hardware manufacturers traditionally take quite some time to push out the updates which leaves unhappy customers and un-updated devices.
Luckily, the hacking community is quite fast with their doings uncovering various unofficial updates for the devices long before they are released officially.
Today, the latest of such unofficial Android updates is for the Samsung Captivate. This device is AT&T’s version of the Samsung Galaxy S and does not ship with Android 2.2, the mobile operating systems latest version.
For those of you who have rooted your devices, all you’re going to have to do is head here and grab the Android 2.2 update now. Of course, you’re going to have to proceed at your own risk as any unofficial software could potentially cause unwanted circumstances.
If anyone tries this out let us know how it goes.
