So many mobile applications are released just about every day for all of the various mobile operating systems. Of these mobile applications, some receive some critical acclaim and others do not. However, many of the mobile applications released by big name software developers usually receive a high level of publicity regardless if they are actually good or not.
One such application is Skype Mobile. If you’ve been paying attention you’ll know that Skype Mobile has been available for several mobile operating system for quite some time including Android. While the app allows you to make calls over WiFi, it does not allow allow you to make 3G calls which effectively limits its usability.
Luckily, the hacking community has managed to hack Skype Mobile for Android giving it the ability to make calls over 3G. Of course, seeing how this isn’t exactly official and/or carrier authorized there is a chance you may incur some extra fees so proceed at your own risk.

One of the biggest problems that plagues the Android ecosystem is the fact that there are so many different updates to the software. Normally this wouldn’t be a problem but hardware manufacturers traditionally take quite some time to push out the updates which leaves unhappy customers and un-updated devices.
Luckily, the hacking community is quite fast with their doings uncovering various unofficial updates for the devices long before they are released officially.
Today, the latest of such unofficial Android updates is for the Samsung Captivate. This device is AT&T’s version of the Samsung Galaxy S and does not ship with Android 2.2, the mobile operating systems latest version.
For those of you who have rooted your devices, all you’re going to have to do is head here and grab the Android 2.2 update now. Of course, you’re going to have to proceed at your own risk as any unofficial software could potentially cause unwanted circumstances.
If anyone tries this out let us know how it goes.

Google’s Android mobile operating system has seen its way onto a whole slew of devices. While most of these devices are tablets and smartphones, the mobile platform has also emerged powering various netbooks.
Some have argued that while the novelty of such a thing is nice it’s not very practical considering Android was made for a mobile slate device and not so much a clamshell touting laptop/netbook. The Toshiba AC100 is a perfect example of such a netbook that is powered by Android and despite getting generally positive reception owners have been wanting a bit more functionality out of the device.
Today, I’m proud to announce that the hacking community has managed to do away with Android on the AC100 and instead install the full fledged Ubutntu 10.10 desktop operating system. Unfortunately the install is still in its infancy so not many things work but as development continues that is sure to change.
When a public release is finalized we’ll let you know.

Apple’s iPad is without a doubt the most popular tablet on the market. However, while it has its fair share of highly sought after features, many have argued that it’s only popular because it’s pretty much the only capable tablet currently available on the market.
This has given Apple haters a bone to pick with the company as the device does have its flaws. Some have even went so far as saying that iOS is destined more for a mobile phone instead of a tablet. But, what if the iPad were running a more feature intensive operating system such as Google’s Chrome OS? Normally, this would only be a dream but thanks to the hacking community, it is now a reality.
A hacker by the name of Hexxeh has managed to install Chrome OS on the iPad (Chromium OS, to be exact) with some positive results. Unfortunately, it has been made known that there are some downsides to this installation but exactly what the downsides are we have yet to find out.

The Samsung Fascinate is Verizon’s version of Samsung’s ever-so-popular Galaxy S handset. The Fascinate features the same 4-inch Super AMOLED display, 1GHz Hummingbird processor and 5-megapixel camera that the rest of the Galaxy S smartphones feature but throws a welcomed LED flash into the mix.
Considering the Samsung Fascinate is the latest Galaxy S device to launch, users haev yet to have a great deal of hands on time with the device. This, of course, means the hacking community has their work cut out for them when it comes to rooting the device – Android’s version of jailbreaking.
However, it seems that said work load wasn’t all that massive as it was announced today that the Samsung Fascinate has already been rooted with the method available to all.
