Folks who exercise a lot or teach aerobics classes know the importance of setting the right tone and maintaining intensity throughout their routine. For those who like to set their workouts to music, this can mean hours of finding just the right songs with perfect intensity and similar tempos. Tempo Magic attempts to circumvent this issue by allowing users to speed or slow the tempo of songs in a uniform manner, and at a base level it works. The downside is that a lack of options and a lot of technical shortcomings make the app mostly useless for all but the most devoted users.

tempo pro 3 208x300 Tempo Magic ReviewThe interface of Tempo Magic is extremely elegant, allowing you to add songs to your playlist with a couple of taps and control the BPM (beats per minute – a measure of tempo) of any song with a simple swipe of the slider in the middle of the screen. There are also options to lock all songs on the playlist at either the same BPM or the same percent speed increased or decreased. So If you want all your music played at 180 BPM that’s fine, or if you just want all your songs to be 8 percent faster the app can do that as well.

The big drawback comes in the fact that if the songs you choose to go in Tempo Magic don’t already share a similar speed then the resulting playback often turns into a mess. Setting a song that’s naturally 100 BPM to 160 or above often turns into a mash of undecipherable sound, while setting everything to be 5 percent faster than before means that slower songs will still be slow compared to more upbeat fare. This issue can be partially offset if you already have a workout mix or some other playlist of similarly paced songs, but if you don’t, then trying to find the right mix can be an exercise in trial-and-error. Another issue is the fact that the app doesn’t play well with some forms of DRM, so there’s no way of knowing which songs will work and which won’t until you try and add them and Tempo Magic tells you it can’t.

For exercise nuts, fitness instructors and even DJs, Tempo Magic is a neat app that might put a new spin on how they play their music. For more casual folks the app holds very little appeal and will likely be met with quizzical looks and a lot of misunderstanding. For these folks it’s a fun novelty, but not worth the $5 investment.

The clue is in the name when it comes to RingToneMaker Pro, it’s an app that creates ringtones for your iPhone. Load the app, choose a song and a 10-30 second segment of it, then at the touch of one button, it’s created. Then it’s a simple matter of connecting your iPhone to iTunes and a couple of clicks of cut and paste. Voila, one new ringtone. No more suffering that damn Marimba or Piano tune.

ringtone1 208x300 RingToneMaker Pro reviewAs you can see from the screenshots, there really isn’t much to look at with RingToneMaker Pro, it’s all very functional. Its unique selling point is in its ability to adjust the pitch and playback speed. This can make for some entertaining ringtones. You can make any song you like sound like Barry White is singing it, or you can make it sound like Alvin and the Chipmunks’ are strutting their stuff. Admittedly after fiddling around with the settings, I still ended up sticking with the original version of the song. But it’s nice to have the option and I’m sure others would be keen to have a silly sounding ringtone.

It’s all quite simple but works for the most part. There’s even a link to a handy video tutorial so that it’s obvious what you need to do via iTunes. The only real irritant is that you can’t easily preview the song. You can once it’s completed and saved of course but there’s no way of doing it on the fly. It would have been very useful if you could tell where you were in the song rather than simply having to guess the correct timings.

Other than that, RingToneMaker Pro does exactly what the name suggests. Sure you could do it yourself for free via the PC/Mac but using this method is much quicker and simpler. If you’re someone who likes switching ringtones regularly and fancy hearing your songs in an entirely different light then this is well worth a look.

iTunes vs App Store Downloads Number of iPhone Apps Downloads to Surpass iTunes Songs Downloads

This is some interesting data shared by Asymco that shows we are downloading apps much faster than we download music on iTunes. As a point of comparison, it took the App Store 2.2 years to be where iTunes was after 5 years. In other words, the App Store is hugely gigantic.

More interesting is that Asymco foresees App Store downloads will pass iTunes downloads by the end of the year. So why is the App Store so popular? Read More

500x shazam 280x210 Shazam comes to the iPhoneThis is Shazam, and it has nothing to do with Captain Marvel. It recently came to the Android OS with Encore and Freemium.

It has now come to the iPhone, with an update to 3.0.0. It is most famous for identifying songs. This version has some iOS4 optimization, tag on startup, 30 second iTunes previews of the songs that are tagged.

You can preview music by listening to 30 second clips and Tag Results, Tag Chart, and Recommendations.

You should be able to get this for $4.99 at the iTunes store. It looks comparable to VEVO and MoodTunes.
